I don't have an answer why they didn't spook, just they didn't. I'm just as perplexed as anyone that is reading this that owns dogs.

There are simple cameras such as these that will alert you if they detect motion and you can set to record. A buddy has them and they are quite decent quality for the price.

Decades ago I took a 300 watt motion detector floodlight and wired on a box and cord and then hung it on an inside wall.

Figured that if they started to break in and the whole place lit up, they might back off. Plus, if I heard a noise and looked out the window and saw interior lights on, I'd know that something moved inside or on their way inside.

Garage has the standard 2 doors (both with glass) but also 3 large windows. (Built in the early 1970s - another age, another world!)

These days Princess Auto might still be selling what I recall is a Brinks? brand spotlight prewired with a plug and cord.

Note: At our rather secluded cabin property this would be the last thing I'd do. It would just light up all the contents for them to see.

Out there I've considered turning off the garage's breaker panel interior lights breaker. Any night time break-in would require them to rely on their flashlights.

Has anyone had stuff returned as a result of security camera footage?

I can see the benefits of being notified when you are at home but am unsure what giving video footage to police afterwards would accomplish. My sister-in-law was broken into this past fall and the police made it seem like even camera footage wouldn't be enough to prosecute.

Cameras at my place are to deter and so I know if someone has broken in. It is also for proof after the fact to save my butt, not necessarily for some scumbag lawyer to pick apart.

If and when I get the notification and see someone in my garage or house the first thing is a call to the RCMP, then I make the decision if I want to act or not.

Dogs need to be trained to protect and attack with confidence. Very sorry to hear you got robbed. I tell you the MF comes in my house is going to have some serious scars for life! Here's my boy working with one of our GSD on the bite work, I tell you 100lbs of German Shepherd latches onto those bastards will teach them a lifelong lesson!!!

That’s a beautiful dog! When watching these training, I always had a question on my mind - what if the dog decide to go after another arm or a leg, not the one that is protected by the biting pad?....

Never happen with a sound minded quality blood working dog. They start with the bite work very young, like 10 weeks. He is still going for the pad, it’s the pad he wants. As training progress the dog is taught to recognize threatening behavior no matter how subtle and that us what will eventually put the dog into protection mode. The biting is the easy part, it is the OUT on command that takes a little more work.
