Lol certainly doesn't happen often.... I know there's an excellent tyrannosaur skeleton at drum that somebody found while fishing the old man.

I have a cousin who found a mammoth tooth on the little smoky river a few years back but don't know of anyone personally finding a tusk.

Hahaha... Are you asking because of all the selling/trading of Mammoth tusks in Russia ?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ks-Russia.html

I just watched a show a few weeks ago, and this alcoholic comrade had a walk-in fridge full of tusks. Like 100 or more. An average tusk weighs 10kg, at $350 per kilo !

For the life of me, I can't remember what show it was...

On one hike looking such things my friend found a mammoth tooth. About 1/2 mile away I found a dinosaur skin imprint on the side of a big sandstone rock.
In the same valley, just outside of Edmonton, back in the 1960's a fellow found a full skeleton of a 6000 year old bison. Some dinosaur footprints were taken from this valley to the Tyrell Museum too. I'm sure there has to be a tusk or two hidden below the surface in that valley.

I saw an ad for guitar picks made from mammoth tusk. 40 buck US each. One tusk would hold quite a few guitar picks. I think some showpiece tusks sell for more than 350 a kilo.

There are places in the Yukon where they get exposed every spring along the river banks. Both tusks and teeth all over the place.

A friend of mine has a small gold mining operation in the Yukon. They have found some over the years while digging and washing. I believe they said most of them are easily damaged and not totally intact.

Default Mammoth tusk

I have done carvings and have a few pieces, biggest piece is a cross section about 7 pounds. Got these from a gold miner in the Yukon.

Good ole Super Dave Osborne! Where is he now?

My cousin found a mammoth tooth on his farm. Their farm is on the N. Saskatchewan river east of Shandro Bridge.
They still have it.

When I can get to the computer I will send you a few pics
A liner lock is a lick that blocks the blade from closing internally as opposed An external lock on the back of the folder
The scales of course are what make up the sides of the knife

Default Cream Color

Here is a pure cream Color set of Python grips I had custom
Made a couple years back. Made in Florida and imported into Canada no problem. The problem was the cost. Now in US dollars makes it really crazy. Back then not so bad. Today I would not do it given the really tough exchange rate.
Most important is that ivory is banned in some places so the focus is on mammoth.

Stabilization is critical too.
The guy had a large clean cream Color tusk from Alaska without any imperfections and it was the closest thing I will ever get to ivory these days.

Is mammoth tusk ivory ?

I never really heard of people finding tusk like an arrowhead .

Are they legal to keep or is it requested by law to turn it in ?

Interesting post.

A few years back I enjoyed building kit folders. Here's one with Mammoth scales my uncle gave me. It's got brass bolsters , brass lever, brass pins, also did simple file work on the back, the bail is made from 1/8" brazing rod. Still have a bit of Mammoth that I may use in a Bamboo fly rod someday.

I don't think it counts as finding if you are the one who killed the mammoth

Ouch!

I have a few small pieces.

Used to have an 8' tusk from a bull, simply amazing how they used these to dig up food.

My favourite piece is this 18" section that shows how tusks are composed of the classic canine tooth shape.

Awesome knife handles and pistol grips. Also that tip is very cool, I would have never thought they would be that pointy.
