Default Misericordia hospital closed to new patients- Covid outbreak. Whoulda thought

Before anyone snivels whines and brays 'there's a million people here, that's only .00024374% bwahaha who cares'

think about it a minute. An entire hospital has shut the doors to new patients, you are down a massive piece of healthcare. If the rest follow suit, what are your options?

EDMONTON -- The number of COVID-19 infections linked to the Misericordia Hospital has grown to 32, according to the province's health minister.

The outbreak has prompted new closures and restrictions at the hospital. While the emergency room remained open as of early Monday afternoon, the hospital is now closed to new admissions and transfers for surgical and medicine patients.

Patients will be transferred to other Edmonton-area hospitals. Surgical capacity is now limited to day surgery.

Alberta reports 45 new cases of COVID-19; outbreak at Edmonton hospital
Tyler Shandro described the situation as "an evolving situation" over the past two days.

There are 18 patients and 14 staff that have contracted COVID-19 including at least one physician, according to Shandro. Two more patients linked to the outbreak have died.

Eight new cases were identified over the weekend, consisting of seven patients and one staff member.

"We are taking this situation extremely seriously and have taken swift action," said Dr. David Zygun, the AHS Edmonton Zone's medical director.

"We are taking significant measures to ensure the safety of patients, staff physicians and volunteers."

The outbreak at the hospital has been among those listed on Alberta Health Services website but the province does not disclose specific case numbers as they change rapidly.

Patients who have tested positive are being cared for on three units, but the hospital says eight units are now included in the outbreak as a "necessary precuation."

Unaffected areas include women's health services, addiction and mental health, and critical care

Families are encouraged to meet virtually with their loved ones.

Correction:
A previous headline on this story incorrectly stated 32 patients were infected with COVID-19 at Misericordia. In fact, there are 18 patients and 14 staff memberse who have been infected as of July 6.

Who cares about those that will die from illnesses or injuries other than Covid, such as organ failure, cancer, trauma.... ?

Many People have already died and many more will because of delayed medical access for non-covid concerns.

This hospital closure will kill people.

The "rest" cannot follow suite.
The line is already at our toes when hospitals will have to carry on despite the risks.

This hospital closure will kill people.

Yup, there are more lethal problems out there than Covid. Covid or no Covid, we need to accommodate those people.

Completely irresponsible actions on the part of Alberta Health in needlessly cancelling virtually all health care. Even though it is my tax dollars that would pay in the end, I really hope that all the families affected like this due the government

this is frightening. If I couldnt have gotten into the trauma center at the foothills end of November I wouldnt be pizzing off a lot of people here now, and my lady has a pacemaker, what if something happens to it and she cant get in? we have to look after more people than just those with this virus, what are we supposed to do, have a hospital draw, short stick gets to die, lucky ones get a bed? If communist China can build hospitals on short notice in record time why cant a modern country with the resources we have do anything similar all we can do is give money to countries who dont deserve it for crap no one really gives a crap about. we need a leader not a puppet drama queen to take charge of our country and make more happen than fake kisses and lispy duh duh duhs. at least with all the BS protests a lot of the wastes of skin who vote Liberal will get to take part in the draw. And hopefully the drama queen gets to participate in it too. my opinion not the forums

I’ve been waiting for a lung biopsy surgery with maybe a 4 day hospital bed if all were to go right... the surgeon told me that there’s no way for me to get in now until after the “crisis” is over.. I could have been in and out a long time ago without getting near Covid patients but no... I have to wait now as junk is growing in my lungs as well as the outer wall of lungs now.. hard to breathe when even walking across the street.. what a messed up system we have right now, this has been going on for a year last June when it all started.. I’m still waiting while I cough up blood from my dying lungs...

Sorry to hear Zip. Guess I got lucky living in Calgary cause I had my protatectomy done last week and only waiting a month.
Do ya think if one of our high and mighty politicians needed anything done as in surgery they would be put on the back burner? I think not!!!!!!

Stating there are only X number of people sick at any one time is extremely misleading when it comes to an highly contagious virus. If you have a core number of cases and go about business as usual that number of say 32 could jump to thousands in relatively short order (see the USA).

That said I think its silly that they are still treating Covid patients in regular hospitals. Given how long this epidemic is going to linger they should be setting up separate Covid testing and treatment centers away from everything else specially health care. Why would you keep encouraging Covid cases to come to a hospital full of already compromised people...the people most susceptible to Covid. I suspect just as with the "masks don't work" BS this is another area public health will realize their poor decision making and lack of foresight and eventually change their course. Yes it will cost money...so will hospital shutdowns. C'est la vie.

Thank you, and I'm glad to hear you got in and out...no politician has ever sat on a burning back burner like us pee ons do... I'm feeling okay except the not being able to breathe plus the amount of blood per day getting coughed up does get in the way of some of my fun...maybe I'll still be around to answer my phone when I get the call to come in somewhere around the year 2030....

HI Zip. That's hard to hear as my mom needed lung surgery and she got her tumor removed during Covid, same 4 day stay, was out in 3. Were in Edmonton, not sure what center your waiting on. I hope you get your appt asap. My mom is already on the follow up chemo and doing good. Wish you the same.

As far as the OP, I know the hospitals designated certain floors for covid issues, I wonder if they should not have turned some empty office building into a covid only center and keep the hospitals doing their thing. Probably not feasible but an idea for the next virus.

I'm waiting on U of A right at the moment, but if things get worse, which they are...I may have to go to emerg, at the Royal Alex I think...not sure what to do right now, ,my lung specialists told me that he was surprised the surgeon wrote on my file in the computer not to call me till crisis is over, so I'll wait it out some more and hope it's not to sinister inside my old lungs.
I'm happy to hear your mom is doing good, that's awesome...I hope she continues to get better every single day..
Thanks for your support Sooner..

This "Crisis" is going to continue for a couple of years. Are we willing to curtail essential services that long ????? We seem to find a way around it for lot lesser .

A lot of people are dead or dying because idiots do not understand or are fighting direction of Health Officials.

So many idiots have the notion 'It wont kill me, my wife or 2.3 children because we are young, healthy.....' but for Grandma and Grampa and anyone with underlying health issues (Zip, CBench) it can be deadly.

As people are finding out, death is not always a direct result of Covid, but indirect kills too.

A coupla years for sure.. I’m afraid that it just may go on longer.. a scared population is easier to control.. we are nowhere near a huge problem with Covid yet, I’m not saying that’s the same for the rest of the world, but in our world we are not in the eye of the storm yet..

All of the people whining about how stupid this is.
So tell me...someone from your family goes into the hospital to get treated for a non-Covid issue, contracts Covid and dies.
How long before you are on the phone to your lawyer to sue Alberta Health??

About the same amount of time when a family member dies waiting for months and months with a serious problem. Covid is not the only bad thing out there.. come on, why would you even post that?

Wish they would make it mandatory to wear masks in Alberta. They are thinking of doing that in Ontario., Cases are on the upswing again and when out and about as only needed, hardly anyone is wearing a mask. Tom Hanks says it well.
No mask, no respect. It's in runaway mode in the US and it won't be stopped, lets not let that happen here. Canada is in better shape than most of the world, but we are getting lax and that may kill you or others. In the pharmacy the other day and their were 9 people working there. Only 1 had a mask on.
Going in for a root canal today, that's why I'm a bit cranky.
Stay safe people.

She went through the RA. Hers doesn't sound near as serious as yours so that baffles me that yours was postponed. I wonder if it is a doc thing holding you back. Mom's doc warned her there may be a bit of a delay but it would proceed asap. Take care.

https://calgaryherald.com/opinion/co...n-not-covid-19

On April 16, Jerry (Ched) Dunham was told by a nurse at his Alberta doctor’s office that a procedure to get a defibrillator for his racing heart would not be going ahead because of COVID-19.

Dunham remained waiting for 45 minutes to hopefully see his doctor, to plead with him to get the procedure done, to no avail. His doctor was “too busy” to see him, he was told, even though it was a scheduled appointment and no other patients were seen coming in or out of the office.

While he waited he wrote an impassioned post on his Facebook page.

“I was basically told that the government is willing to risk my life to save my life,” he wrote.

“Let me say that again, my government told me they’re willing to let me die, which according to them is for my own safety . . . .”

Prophetic words. Within two months, on June 7, the talented musician and father of two young daughters died at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, with his devastated family by his side. He was just 46 years old.

Dunham, who had toured around the country as a bass player with various bands, suffered a cardiac arrest on May 30 and was deprived of oxygen to his brain.

Jerry Dunham, who died in hospital from heart failure in Medicine Hat, was an accomplished musician.
A family member wrote a long paper trail advocating on behalf of Dunham and his desperate need for surgery but never received the courtesy of even one reply.

Eighteen months earlier — the devoted dad of six-year-old Atlin and Reydian, who turned nine just two days after Dunham died — couldn’t catch his breath. A fit and strong construction worker who played hockey most of his life, Dunham was living and working in Palmerston, Ont., a town of just 2,500 people about an hour’s drive northwest of Kitchener, where his former spouse and their children live.

He was eventually diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was told at that time that he might need a heart transplant but in the meantime they were going to do some testing, put him on medications and would eventually fit him with a defibrillator.

“So six months later or so, time for surgery and boom, all non-essential surgeries postponed,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“Heart surgery, apparently considered non-essential. Now I know some say that’s non-essential, but it’s pretty goddam essential to me. Now I’m told today possibly could be a year or two?

“So what I’m just supposed to kiss my ass goodbye? I’m starting to freak out here. Wondering what I should do?” he asked.

More than 100 alarmed friends commented, urging him to contact the media. Now his “soul friend,” Krista Lambier — the mother of his beloved daughters — is the one talking to the media.

“I vowed to him on his death bed — with our daughters sobbing for their daddy to wake up — that his death would not be in vain. I promised him that,” said a weeping Lambier, who is staying with his devastated parents, Karen and Gerald Dunham until next week.

After Dunham was diagnosed with his serious heart issues, doctors in Ontario rescinded his special commercial driver’s licence that allowed him to operate large trucks and equipment. Despite everyone’s best hopes, the medication he was prescribed did not regulate his heart and without work “he lost everything he worked so hard for” — his home, his truck and ultimately his community, says Lambier, 42.

He ended up moving back to his parents’ home in Redcliff, Alta., a town just a 10-minute drive north of Medicine Hat.

“We’re all alternating between feelings of profound sadness, disbelief and total rage,” admitted Lambier, whose friends have started a Go Fund Me page for her daughters.

“How many people have died on waiting lists for surgeries in hospitals that are empty and have no patients in them?” she wondered. “How many have had their health deteriorate beyond repair? Why couldn’t each province have left some hospitals open to deal with essential surgeries and sickness unrelated to COVID?”

Those are all valid questions that many of us have pondered. It would have been the wise thing to do, but as they say, hindsight provides perfect vision.

It’s estimated that about 200,000 surgeries and other procedures — including cancer and heart surgeries — have been cancelled as hospitals were readied for a possible deluge of COVID-19 patients.

Modelling in Ontario estimated that the cancellation of elective heart surgeries would result in more than 30 deaths by early May.

On Monday, a spokesperson with Alberta Health wrote in answer to Postmedia questions: “All urgent, emergency and cancer surgeries have been available throughout the pandemic. Albertans who need urgent surgery will get it. AHS has indicated that they are not aware of any deaths due to cancellations of scheduled surgeries.”

Lambier says when she and her girls flew out from Ontario to be with Dunham both girls were convinced that the second their dad — “who was crazy about them” — heard their voices, he would wake up.

“When they saw him they were absolutely crushed,” recalls Lambier, crying.

“Our oldest, Reydian, got up on the bed, hugging her dad, begging him, ‘Please Daddy, please Daddy, come back to us. Please Daddy. It’s Reydian.'”

The youngest daughter rocked back and forth on the floor, hugging her knees, sobbing. She, too, eventually got up to hug her dad good-bye.

After he was taken off the ventilator, a doctor told them he would pass away within minutes or hours. He lasted two-and-a-half days because his body remained strong. He was a young man who needed help with his heart.

He spent more time in intensive care as a result of having a heart attack that was preventable, than he would have receiving a defibrillator.

His mother Karen, 63, says her son was such a loving, caring person who deserved better.

“The system failed him,” she said Monday evening. “I just don’t understand how a heart can be called non-essential. You can’t live without a properly functioning heart.”

Lambier says over the days she spent at Dunham’s side, one nurse cast doubts about the severity of the pandemic and told them they could take off their masks because “the hospital’s almost empty.'”

Later, Lambier was asked if the family wanted his death to be recorded as a COVID-19 death.

“I said, ‘no. He tested negative for COVID-19. That’d be a flat out lie.'”

As for Dunham, he apologized to his Facebook friends.

“Sorry for the rant folks, just frustrated that the government gets to decide who lives or dies . . . . I’m willing to get sick and live than die and not get sick . . . .”

I understand what you sre saying but ut comes fown to this to me. If my mom goes to the hospital for her cancer treatment she MAY get covid and if she does it MAY kill her. If she doesn't get her treatment she WILL die, no if, ands, buts, or MAYS about it. Which one is better?

Actually nevermind, I just answered my own question. One is negiigence and uou can easily sue for. The other is murder and a criminal case you will never win. That is f-ing brilliant. Twisted and insane, but brilliant.

Well if it starts spreading up here like what is happening in the states there is a good chance of another CERB extension.

I saw this coming about 10 years ago when waiting for wifes treatment at the Mis. While walking around almost no repairs, tiles needed replace ,doors not painted etc etc. Almost impossible to properly clean a hospital of virus that was probably neglected for many years by our great provincial gubberment.

I had surgery on my spine on Monday to remove cancer tumors and cant say enough good things about how well its was handled by my doctors and nurses. We passed on the hospital stay afterwards and came home with a list of things to watch out for as far as complications go and have a video conference every day with the doctor for follow up.1st class care all around during these trying times.

That hospital has a designated COVID-19 unit; I don't really find this surprising. Sometimes the best reasonable effort may not be enough to contain this sufficiently.

Maintenance and staffing don't get votes, new hospitals do. Governments have been really negligent in that area for decades. Not unusual for entire wards to be closed due to a lack of staff, while they're expanding on the other side of the building.
