Default Morinville and Area Ponds

Has anyone else noticed how dead the lakes around Morinville are this season?

I have visited them all and nothing seems to be rising this season.

No rises does not mean dead. Try fishing deep or at least below surface with leeches, damsel flies, dragon flies and you will be surprised, or not!

Fished deep and up top. Very few guys fishing out this way this year as no one is catching much of anything. Most seem to have given up.

The F&G pond apparently had 1400+ Brown and RB put in this May.

Heritage had 700 or so.

It does seem like there was a bumper crop of minnows and shore weeds this year though!

As below -F&G pond had about 700 brown and 700 rainbow out in.

Heritage had about 700 brook trout apparently. I have caught a few out of heritage pond this year but they are all rainbows from previous stockings.

Last year I was catching way more at these ponds including through the ice.

With this heat, they are feeding at sundown and sunrise. We haven't been having trouble, as long as we can get out late.

Actually, if it's really cloudy there may be some big trout working the shallower water. likely for minnows. That's what I've found in the last few outings.

I still remember back in the day when they use to stock 18000 rainbows at Cardiff pond... too bad they stopped stocking this many. There were some real nice rainbows coming out of that lake in the past. Now, all I catch there is crayfish

The government stocking reports shows that they put 12,000 rainbows into Cardiff this year, maybe lower than previous years because of the problem with hatcheries and the overall availability for the province.

What kind of fly do crayfish (sp?) bite?

No perch, no overwintering trout in Cardiff anymore been that way for a few years now. Got too weedy, probably from the golf course runoff.

No perch, no loss. Huh? Trout overwintered in Cardiff quite nicely. Was catching 13 inchers in late April/early May with a leech pattern before the pond was stocked later in May.

Disagree. Big loss. Used to catch plenty of 10 inch perch and even got one 13 incher there. There was never a shortage of food for the trout either, even with the perch. Had several 20 inch trout from there as well.

Re overwintering: First I heard of it, you're the only one in the last 5 years. That's a good sign, but I doubt it will ever be what it was.

Have been talking with some guys at the lake by the highway.

1. Very slow season. The odd big one but very very few in general.

2. Some 14" range but.very slow bite

3. Fly fishrrmen are not there like last year. Hardly see anyone with a flyrod unlike laat year

4. Nothing rising

5. Weeds are almost everywhere along the shore

6. One guy claimed ACA netted for a fish count?

7. Stocking shows 700 brook trout stocked in may. Have not seen or heard of anyone catching one.

The F&G pond is a ghost town. No one there. Nothing rising. Apparently they put 700RB and 700 brown in. I saw some browns right after the stocking but nothing since. Apparently pike are in there.

The f&g pond gets fished out in a matter of weeks by the same folks that stocked crayfish in all the area ponds. You can see them early in the spring with their 5-10 offspring running around, and naturally all those kids "catch their limits." I can confirm there was pike caught in there in the past, which was likely put there by someone who was mad at the perch. SMH. It's a bit of a gong show.

As for the reservoir, I'll give it a shot in the next few days. Brookies would be fun.
