Default Banded waterowl

I was at Rundle Park with my brother and wife today and noticed that many of the Canada geese have bands. Is there areas that banded geese may frequent more or is it just luck of the draw?

Urban geese get banded a lot more than their rural cousins,,, probably banded fairly recently.

Around cities is the most common, but you can get bands from anywhere. I've seen bands from Nashville, Texas, high in the arctic to just a couple of miles away. I read the numbers off a couple of the geese in hermitage park this summer and they were 8 years old

Is there a link of banding sites maybe in the regulations or on ACA? Would make hunting and collecting jewelry a lot easier!

I get the (probable) sarcasm, but this is the kind of comment that will get you in trouble. Think before you post.

Birds are very often banded in hunting allowed areas, not just conservation areas etc.

Yea I tried to edit it, as my phone auto correct changed it to a waterowl, not sure what that is but was too late to edit once I realized.

Default lanyard full

Double dog whistle lanyard full of duck and goose bands but it has taken over 30 years to fill it. used to get a couple each year living in Ontario but the west is very stingy to give up their bands. Got a goose a few years ago and filled in the on line form. Turns out it was banded near here (chestermere lake) 19 years before but they were unsure of the birds age at time of banding.
Dont remember it but I bet that bird was tough!!

Urban geese are banded often by CWS. Likely just tagged a bunch recently, you can tell if it was this year if any of the young have bands. I bet the adults come back each year....great place to raise a brood.

Same here. So many birds here that you have to shoot one pile of birds to get a band especially if you are not hunting in areas banders work. To date I have taken one banded bird here, a snow goose, in 4 seasons whereas in Ontario I accumulated a few more.

Was the band stamped Maryland on it? Likely so as years ago the dept of the USFWS had their office in Maryland and that was the address stamped on the band to submit your recovery info to for finding out where, how old etc your bird was? Now it's a Washington, DC address and records are now kept by USGS (United States Geological Survey). The bird banding has always been a joint effort by CWS and USFWS plus now a host of other partners including private.

And yes it's amazing how far and wide they will travel. I shot a Canada Goose in 2004 in New Liskeard, Ontario that had been banded as "too young to fly" in 1997 in Issungua Province, Greenland!!
