custom rod building
hi out there follow fisher men & women any one out there tackle custom rod building i was wondering about pros and cons and is it cost saving at all worth it ,. was thinking of a winter hobby to put together some high quality fly rods for the next season and feed back would be apreciated thx

I have never done it but just like everything else similar I am guessing it takes a lot of knowledge, experience and proper equipment to end up with a truly high quality rod that you will really be proud of. I doubt there is much in the way of cost savings but it would allow you to build exactly what you want.

I think I would enjoy rod building as well. Likely not save money though - just for enjoyment and hopefully a super product in the end.

Can save some money for sure, and there are lots of instructional videos on the net. Biggest negative is not be able to try the blank before you commit, rodbuilding.org is a wealth of info. For what it's worth I have built 3 fly rods, one on a Batson RX7 blank and two on Mud Holes MHX blanks. I found the Batson blank to slow for my liking, really really like the MHX 6wt blank, the 4wt is a little slower, but this is all personal preference. If you go with big name blanks the savings is not as substantial as the smaller Co. There are two Canadian co. that I'm familiar and have dealt with, and would recommend either.

I built my first rod this summer, and I will be building more. It was pretty easy actually and can be like any hobby. It can be very expensive or not at all, depending on the equipment and supplies you buy. But very satisfying when you catch the first fish on it!

I've dressed a few rods from a blank (building a rod is really doing it from scratch such as a bamboo builder). Not difficult of you are handy, and have patience. There are several books out there on how to and resources on the web. Some shops also run how-to courses. I have a spey rod build on my blog if you are interested I'll provide a direct link.

Actually this is just a 4/5 weight that I use for fishing large browns on the Bow and Lakers. Couldn't get out this year but want ot hit the Skeena next season. Have my eye on another blank ot build for that.

What blanks are you using for the spey rods? I have "dressed" a few rods before as well, but all single hand rods. I was thinking of getting a spey blank for the bow and maybe one for steelhead as well.

thx buddy for your info im doing researh as we speak, wanna do a small stream fishin rod and 2 6wt for still water, for floatig and sink tip

ok good i relatively new to the flyfishing what action should guy have for a 5/6 wt rod i wanna build two of them for still waters and one small stream fishing rod for creeks and small rivers ( muskeg, wildhay etc.) your expereince would be plenty helpfup ful and what is a pm in your reply

Action will be your preference. Some people like a fast rod for longer casting while some prefer the extra bend in the rod which makes for a more entertaining fight.
Here is a site I had looked at before and it explains some of the advantages and disadvantages. The best way to figure out what you actually want would be to go somewhere you can try a couple out and see what you like best.

Both were 9ft 4pc, 6wt and 4wt and both were rated as fast, the 4 is not as fast as the 6, the 6 is a cannon, nicest casting rod I've ever tried. Having said that I've not tried a top end anything except G loomis, I prefer the MHX. The deluxe handle kit from Valley is really nice and a great price, very nice cork. I've read a few good reviews on the Pacbay Quickstrike as well, I am hoping to build another 6wt this winter and I think I'll try this blank.
