Default stock swap on voere mauser 98

I have 2 very similar Austrian Voere 98s (circa 69-70). One is in 6.5x55 (hinged floorplate) and the other 308 (non-hinged floorplate). My son says he wants to start hunting this year and I would like him to be able to use the 6.5.
The rifles differ in LOP and the stock on the 308 fits him well.
I had hoped to be able to swap the stocks, but the actions don't drop in.

Any thoughts? I do not want to cut the stock on the 6.5
Thanks
Vance

This also may be more trouble than its worth, and I can accept that.

First of all measure the spacing on the action screws, as you may have different length actions.

As for a stock try calling a few gunsmiths, they might have a take off stock that they’d damn near give away.( usually gathering dust)

Default action length

Thanks Dick,
That makes sense. Action screws are same distance apart on both. Bolt from the 308 fits into the 6.5 action and locks up if that tells me anything
Vance
I will try checking with gunsmiths thanks
Other thought is to start him with the 308 in managed recoil ammo, but would rather the 6.5
I just hunted in TX with it for the first time and it had good Karma for me there, so I would enjoy him using it

Remington and Federal make reduced recoil loads in factory.

If you reload use the reduced load formula for H4895.

Alberta Gun stocks in New Norway specialise in Military replacement stocks for pretty inexpensive prices. They can exactly duplicate the existing 6.5 stock and then you can finish it and shorten it if you want. Their stocks still take a fair amount of fitting and finishing so not a good choice if you aren't a little handy with hand tools. If you don't want the work, order a finished one from Boyds in the States. Will be under $200 landed here.

Your idea of reduced 308 loads would be way cheaper and far less work. It is very easy to work up a reduced 130 grain 308 load that will have virtually the same kick as the 6.5 does.
