Default How many pigeon hunters here?

I know that pigeon hunting is popular in Europe and in the USA but have never seen decoys for pigeons or doves here. I shot a few yesterday and they are marinating for the grill today but not sure what to expect. Is it anything like grouse or waterfowl?

How would I attract more? Seems they came into our duck mojo and kept circling till we shot them all down.

I shoot lots of flushed pigeons from grain bins and old barns and though I have planned it a million times I have never actually hunted them over decoys.
I have heard that a mojo teal will suck them right in and once you get a few birds they can be placed around as decoys.
As for eating em anyone I have talked to says they are not worth eating so I have never tried myself.

When I was 15, 35 years ago, my buddy and I went looking for a pheasant release by Vegreville. We never found it. We did however find a farmer who had scads of pigeons flying around. We asked him if we could shoot em. We had fun and got about a dozen. They were full of grain from his silos. My granny cooked em up and they were delicious. Darker meat and flavorful. Would shoot em and eat em again anytime.

Anyone who says they are not worth eating does not know what they are missing. The several I have eaten were flushed from the grain bins and were delicatessen quality. I have not specifically hunted them but it was an opportunity as the framer wanted them gone as they shat on everything in the yard.

I am not saying I would go out of my way to buy decoys to hunt pigeons but if a farmer would be ok with me shooting a few as they circle his silos then why not? These pigeons came in close since we were hunting near silos for waterfowl but that is the only time I have had them come in.

If your going to hunt silos and grain bins the best technique is to wait for evening when they all come to roost. Throw a small rock at the bin to flush the first few then as you shoot the rest will start to pour out of the bin. The first few times you flush them the birds will slowly come back within 10-15 min.

Don't usually go out of my way to find em, but if they're around to fill the gaps in between flocks of geese, then by all means.
As for eating them.....

Yea I think that's what many people use in Europe since .22 are illegal because they're too quiet haha!!! But an air gun that is up to 315 meters per second is legal....

its more like eating boot leather, lots of boiling to tenderize, they are a flying muscle as well as a flying rat . as for attracting them wheat is one of there favorites and they make really great targets for full throttle varmint rifles or scatterguns

Bow hunting is illegal in Poland for example but night hunting for hogs is basically the only way to hunt them there. But then you are not allowed to cut down trees on you right own property without a forest ranger saying it's ok so... every country has its own weird laws I guess.
