Not something that keeps me awake at night, but i often think about the big cats when bank fishing the NSR's more remote areas. They like attacking from behind they say. Most of the river bank is 10-15 feet higher than the beach area. Perfect place to get surprised from behind and above.

I live nearby along the Whitemud ravine. I have seen both cougar and black bear in the ravine, not far from the Nellie Carlson school. These animals are likely around more then we realize. A buddy of mine occasionally puts a trail cam in the ravine to see what is moving through the area. Lots of coyote, raccoon, moose, whitetail, the occasional fox, and the neighbour's kids smoking weed or sneaking a few beers. A couple years back he got a great side profile pic of a big tom down in the bowl just north of the Henday.

It was only about 5 years ago or so F&W had to deal with a big tom in a back yard near 151 st and 110 avenue. IIRC.

A few years back a Wolverine and a Lynx were spotted in St. Albert as well.

That cougar was in my next door neighbors yard when it was shot. We had paw prints in our garden and my wife is still alittle skittish about going outside after dark and turns on all the outside lights before going out to the garage. My wifes cousin was killed by a cougar in Banff almost 20 years ago when it stalked her on a x-country ski trail so it really freaked her out.

No big deal. The river valley has had 5-7 resident cougars for the past few decades. It is just that we see them very rarely. I bet they see plenty of people though!
