I don't have a lot of experience but I'll give you my opinion anyway. I have numerous knives each for a differing task. Out trapping I have a hunting knife on my belt, I skin coyote/fox with a cariboo and paring knife, muskrats with a filleting knife and beaver with a beaver skinning knife. I also have a Piranta scalpel type knife to trim holes for sewing. Those are what I've found work for me the best but I'm sure that there is room for more if it makes life easier for me or does a better job.

I think that personal preference and the way that people do things plays a large part in it as well.

I'm curious to see if there are any single knife guys out there and what knife that they use.

Default Knives

I don't really think there can be one knife for everything. I use a filleting knife, a scalpel, a caping knife, a shingle knife, and an old hunting knife for beavers. Try everything, you will find what works best for different animals. I guess I would say that I use the old rapala filleting knife the most.

It’s my opinion a variety of knifes are required in order to obtain efficient and effective pelting results when dealing with a variety of animals. My basic choices are a:
1. knife with a round tip curved blade for “clean” skinning beaver.
2. sharp pointed thin blade for opening cut on small animals and splitting tails.
3. small skinner with curved tip for general work on smaller animals
4. Piranta scalpel blades for splitting lips and other detailed taxidermy work, skinning out toes etc.
5. 3 ˝ inch general blade paring knife for splitting and general overall work on larger animals ..

But, if I had to choose only one to work with it would be the #5 style; the 3 ˝ inch blade paring knife.
