East coast hunter new to Alberta

Hello fellow hunters I’m new to Alberta I’m from the east I’ve been hunting black bear and moose the past 12 years , I’m planning on spring bear hunting and deer /elk/moose whenever possible hoping to get some pointers as I’m new to this beautiful province so tips and hunting buddies much appreciated ,cheers

target a crown land area, get a map, start the adventure now and burn some gas.....good luck.....might even find a mosey looking area with a few deer too

Each county produces landowner maps that show which land is private, and which is public. You can also purchase the I Hunter App, that has maps. https://www.ihunterapp.com/

Be aware, that hunting pressure is highest near the larger cities and landowner permission can be much more difficult to obtain near larger cities.

Get the ihunter app it is super helpful. Lets you know what's open in each wmu , has land owner and lease information etc. I use it as my gps for waypoints as well

I’m in a similar position having recently moved to Edmonton from Manitoba... thanks for the links to get started, where can I purchase the land owner maps?

We had a place called Canada Maps or something in Manitoba which was the primary source of those maps, also municipal offices were less helpful but sometimes more up to date.

Here’s a few tips:
Learn the difference between mule deer and whitetail deer.
Learn that every WMU may have different seasons, different harvest criteria, and season dates.
Learn the WMU boundaries.
Read the regulations cover to cover at least 4 times.

Just to add you have to pay for the landowner maps on ihunter. Best hunting app out there

If you can find a "hunting mentor buddy" that has been actively hunting in Alberta for years, you will be way ahead of game. Your success on moose and elk will go way up as many WMU,s now have limited game numbers with lots of wolves and bears. Lastly he will be up on Alberta Game laws. You might join a Alberta Fish & Game club, good place to meet other hunters.

You don’t want to be the guy standing in-front of a CO saying “ well back home we can do this so I thought it was legal here”. Be sure to learn the rules and regulations for hunting and land access. I have heard stories about how private land has very different rules regarding access in other provinces

Educate yourself first so you enjoy your hunting season without legal hiccups.
