Default Radio Recommendation

Looking for a set of two way radios and wondering what others would recommend?

Are you planning on using them out there in the Nelson area?
I am going to assume you are....
The topography out there seriously limits range on all radios/frequencies.
You will be limited to line-of-sight at all times.
I have a place out there and spend 6 months out of the year there on avg.
My advice to you is that given the number of active logging roads, lack of cell coverage , etc you are best off to go and commit to studying for your Ham (Amateur Radio ) Licence and then buying a good set of handhelds for a few hundred dollars.

That way you can legally access all the frequencies and communicate with whomever you need to during an emergency.
I can get approx 7 km range if I'm high up on one of the mountains or ridges and talking to someone down in the valley.
You wont get reception/transmission over the ranges no matter what - that's just physics.

If you do not want to get your licence then I am afraid you will be limited to distances of about 3 km max on a typical FRS radio you buy at a store.
It is not hard to get your Ham licence, just takes some reading from the study guide, take a few online practice tests and then write the exam - it is worth it in my opinion.

Thx C2. Your right about the local mountains.
I'm more focused on the short to medium range. My boys are old enough for us to spread out but not more than a couple of klicks

It's all about the frequency these radios use. The higher common VHF radios are very much line of sight. We used to use CB radio walkie talkies with great success. They are much longer wave (27 Mhz) and outperformed the VHF's by quite a margin.
Multi channel is preferred, as some days propagation occurs and it is not uncommon to have a busy channel from someone talking that is hundreds of miles away. Should be lots of good used units on ebay type sites.
