Are you planning on using them out there in the Nelson area?
I am going to assume you are....
The topography out there seriously limits range on all radios/frequencies.
You will be limited to line-of-sight at all times.
I have a place out there and spend 6 months out of the year there on avg.
My advice to you is that given the number of active logging roads, lack of cell coverage , etc you are best off to go and commit to studying for your Ham (Amateur Radio ) Licence and then buying a good set of handhelds for a few hundred dollars.
That way you can legally access all the frequencies and communicate with whomever you need to during an emergency.
I can get approx 7 km range if I'm high up on one of the mountains or ridges and talking to someone down in the valley.
You wont get reception/transmission over the ranges no matter what - that's just physics.
If you do not want to get your licence then I am afraid you will be limited to distances of about 3 km max on a typical FRS radio you buy at a store.
It is not hard to get your Ham licence, just takes some reading from the study guide, take a few online practice tests and then write the exam - it is worth it in my opinion.
