Question Go and no-go gauges

Anybody use them much? Ever check a factory rifle for headspace?
How much pressure should you feel on a no -go gauge?

In general when I'm barreling a rifle, I remove the ejector pin (if it has one) and the firing pin assembly. I aim for the weight of the bolt handle alone to close the bolt on the go, and not even start on the nogo.

That said, I've seen more than a few factory rifles close on the nogo with very slight pressure.

When I read about guys "checking headspace" and talk about forcing them closed on a gauge I just shake my head.

I always strip the bolt down. A slight touch on the go gauge. Not more than half travel on no-go and none on the field gauge.

half travel on the NO-GO is too much for me ....unless we are talking about a P14 or M17 Enfield........those tapered lugs are interesting to barrel up. With straight lugs it should either close all the way (not good, face the shoulder back) or not start at all.

I'd not panic if a factory barreled rifle closed on a NO-GO and not on a Field gauge. As a matter of fact I owned a factory 700 in 300 Win Mag (bought new) that closed quite nicely on a NO-GO but it was checked after I had shot it for quite a few years so obviously it was not that much too long in the headspace.
