Default Nikon Scopes...need an opinion.

Monarch 3 vs Prostaff 7..which would you rather?

thinking something like a 2.5-10x40 with BDC

Pros/Cons?

If you can afford it, get the Monarch 3.

Download the Nikon Spot On App if you get the BDC. Run your ballistics at each power and print off then tables.

Cool app, Most Nikon scopes also come with m.o.a marked turrets for a more precise ballistics drop compensation, some Monarchs come with extra external turrets too as a bonus.

The PS-7 is the top of the line ProStaff, but the entire Monarch line (even the 3-series) is a step above them.

Both are excellent scopes for the money ! I still own a ProStaff 5, but it's on a rifle I have for sale...

Not familiar with the way Nikon markets their scopes now. Most of my Rifles sport the older Buckmasters which when purchased was the mid level Nikon Offering. Couple have the Monarchs.
Other than one rifle with a Vortex, it is all I use.

Can't see you going wrong with either of your selections to be honest!

I have used a Monarch 5 with advanced BDC reticle. Its a great scope. I am sure the Monarch 3 is great also.

I still think Nikon's are great value. I would buy another no problem. Get a Monarch 3 or 5 you will be very happy with it.

I would definitely stick with the monarch 3 if you can afford it. The prostaff 7 still has the prostaff glass, it's just in a 30mm tube, unless your want more elevation and windage adjustment.

Nikon's MONARCH 3 is a step up from the PROSTAFF platform. The PROSTAFF 7 is a 30mm tube scope where the MONARCH 3 is your typical 1 inch tube. The glass coating's on the MONARCH will give you better early morning and late evening light gathering capabilities. Both scopes allow for adding a Nikon Custom Turret at a later date if desired. If you need any help dialing in the BDC reticle drop me a note. Spot On is a very accurate ballistic program but only as accurate as the information you enter. Post some pics when you get your scope mounted to your rifle.

This is a pic of a MONARCH 3 2,5-10x42 I have on a 22-250.

Monarch 3, for all the reasons stated. Just picked up a 3-12x42 last week.

I find my monarch 3 has a narrow field of view compared to other scopes of the same power. It's also like looking through a long tunnel.

I'm running a Nikon prostaff on my hunting rifle and I love it ! The clarity feels high end and it's great in low light conditions. Super accurate too.

I have a Prostaff 5 that I really like with the Nikoplex reticle. I have had Nikons BDC reticle in the past and hated it. I just couldnt get used to the circle reticle. Definitely not for me. Id have a look through one before I bought one if your considering the BDC reticle.

So no one has had one not hold zero or other problems relating to not hitting what you are aiming at? I got one of the prostaff haven't used it much yet and I am not sure if I should trust it's internals to hold.

I've had 2 Monarchs, zero problems, a friend has a pro staff 5 on his Tikka T3 lite 300 win mag and likes it. If it was me, I'd spend the little extra and get the Monarch.

I don't think I've ever heard of a story where there was problems, not one, not saying that you cant have issues, but I have heard issues with luepolds, red fields, and yes even vortex. But none with Nikon.

Personally I liked the sight picture I got from the prostaff 7 over the monarch 3.

As a bonus the prostaff 7 has 120 MOA of adjustment vs the 50 MOA on the monarch 3 (If I'm not mistaken with regards to the monarch 3, the 120 is right out of the manual for the prostaff 7)

As I held them both and worked them in the cabelas I ended up with the prostaff and got it at an incredible price of $425.

Thanks to a kind gentleman who gave me his friends and family card as they were not buying that day and the sale ended that day.

ROA- Your PROSTAFF will work fine on your rifle. It wouldn't be such a huge product line if it had problem's with repeatability, clarity and reliability. Rest assured that if something should happen Nikon stands behind what they make.

Guys remember the PROSTAFF 7 is a 30mm tube which will give you significantly more click adjustment then a 1 inch tube. If you choose to add a Custom Turret later the yardage will be greater then a scope of the same magnification and a 1 inch tube. I still dont have myhands on Nikon's new for 2016 MONARCH7/ PROSTAFF 7 line ofscopes to give you some hands on insight. A buddy who used a MONARCH 7 demo to deer hunt last year fell in love with the big optic as he harvested an Oklahoma buck, doe, hog and coyote.

VT- great that someone hooked you up at Cabela's, just another great story about hunters helping hunters.

As always guy's, feel free to drop me a note if you have any question's. Nikon does have a Promo going on right now where you can save $100 on some of their high power optic's. MONARCH 5 and 7 I believe.

I picked up a Pro Staff 7 some months ago and mounted it on a custom heavy barrel 240 Wby, so far I've only sighted it in but I like what I see so far.
