Default real polar bear fur

A buddy offered to sell me a polar bear fur. I am thinking the best use would be for fly tying as it seems their dog did a little chewing over the years.

Anyone know the rules around buying a polar bear fur and chopping up and reselling?

If it was harvested legally there is no problem. You can find it for sale in a lot of the fly shops in Calgary, and have tied with it commercially for years.

Is there really a market for the fur and how would I grade it to see if it is crap or valuable? Any tips on grading would be awesome.

Sell it on eBay to the Americans, it's illegal down there.

Yes, there is a market! Unfortunately not in the US, which is where the biggest customer base would be.

Grading would be based on length and condition (i.e. if the tips are broken off, or the guard hairs are missing = poor to useless).

I am always looking for long (4"+) hair.

Love to have a slice of it. Far better than any other white hair, and very popular for many salmon paterns.

I would be interested in buying the whole thing. I use polar bear in all kinds of colors and would like to get a hide that I can cut up and dye in what ever color I want. Of course I would sell some once I get it dyed.

Pudelpointer is exactally right as far as the grading goes.

There is also the factor of color that goes into grading. Yellow stained (which is normal in certain areas of the bear) will not be as good of a grade as just the plain white.

I'm sure a few of us could provide better feedback as to what you have to work with if you were able to post a few pics showing color, length and density.

I'm sure you have some "value" in a whole hide or part hide.

I know nothing but what is on here. I have asked for a photo. He has to pick up the fur and he mentioned it is about 8 foot long. He also might get a larger one from a relative also in the estate settlement. He said the fur is white and hair is 3-4 inches.

Stay tuned...I may need more help. I may just end up making some polar bear skin pants and jacket to ride the ctrain with. Maybe on a warm day I can be in a greenpeace commercial then.
