The longer butt stock that allows you to shoulder the "mare's leg" makes a huge difference in the accuracy dept. IMHO. If someone wants to try before you buy drop me a PM. Honestly the extra 5.5 inches is a worthy trade-off to me.

But it seems to me that when you add a longer butt stock you now have just a short barrelled rifle (or carbine) and not a mare's leg at all.
I will be hunting with a "mare's leg" this fall.

Now why would you say something so stupid? Has nothing to do with the subject we are talking about.

Your firearm may be much more accurate now. But my point is, it is no longer a "mare's leg".
I reckon if one had a real desire for a carbine in .44 mag. with a really short barrel they would have been frustrated with canada's gun laws which prevented them from making one. So when the ranch hand came along they had the opportunity to legally create their short barrelled carbine. Good for you.

I am not stuck on a name...whether it is or isn't a "mare's leg" makes 0 difference to me.
Packability, accuracy , shootability, and functionality trump "image".
I think that accurate range is limited due to the way you must shoot a "mare's leg"....heck I think I can shoot a true handgun better with 2 hands than I can a "mare's leg"....but now that I can shoulder it. It makes all the difference.
Maybe I just need more practice. I am interested in knowing @ what distance I could hit a 6 inch pie plate @ 5 out of 5 times....that will be my comfortable distance.
It is still smaller, quieter, and lighter than a shotgun I would normally use for this purpose I bought it for.

I lucked out on the stain, went to the local hardware store and did a match no mixing needed bought off the shelf. I sponged it in and took a clean sponge to rub/absorb the excess and it came out really close. I have a lot of stain left, depending where you are I can get some to you.

I just briefly looked at the fit and it appeared as though some time would need to be spent in the wrist area. I live an hour south of you by the looks of things.

I had an opportunity to shoot a Henry Mare's Leg today in .45LC. Ok, I can see the point. Compact packing, where a handgun wouldn't be legal, but still a compact defensive firearm for a bow hunter. See, I can be swayed with the right information. This thing would definetely give me more ease of mind than a spray can. I was truly amazed as to how fast and comfortably I could cycle the rounds. Mind you, Henries are smooth, don't know that Rossie's would be likewise. As it if were for protection, which is all that I can think of, reliability and smooth cycling would be primary. Still though, my full sized. 444 comes with much more authority. I did like it though. So, Lefty, bring that Ranch Hand, I'll bring the Marlin, let's put 'em both to task and see what comes of it.

I think the Henry ones are smoother and prettier....they are also a couple hundred more and a touch heavier.... But the higher quality shows!
There are some ways to get the Rossi to cycle smoother....I think repeated use is one of them.
The 45LC was going to be my next choice if I couldnt find the 44 mag I picked up.
If I can make it to the DV get together I will tuck the Rossi in my pocket

I've been looking at these in 45 Colt for a while now I have absolutely no interest in them as a Mare's Leg though.
As far as I am concerned a Mare's Leg is a almost useless gimick but with a standard butt stock it would make a fantastic short backwoods carry gun I would load it up with my Beartooth 345gr WLNGC's.
Only reason I do not have one yet is they do not come in stainless steel.
Was also just thinking if it is not to short I could possibly set up the Mare's Leg butt stock for my 5 year old son to try out I'd load him up with my 200gr RNFP cast cowboy loads.

I agree fully, after owning mine for a short time....I realized I was either going to make some mods or I was going to sell it.
The mods I picked up for it only add an additional 5.5 inches to the total length but the gains in accuracy and handling far outweigh the extra length and the slight weight difference.

I've heard several people say this and I guess it all depends on what you expect out of it. I bought mine to serve as an easily concealable backpack gun that would do for bear protection in the back country. To me, it is the perfect choice with absolutely nothing gimmicky about it.
I finally got the new sights on mine and got out to shoot it today. I figure this three shot group off hand at 25 yards will do just nicely. I think people are expecting something out of this rifle that it was never designed for if they figure it's gimmicky. I'll take a Marlin Guide Gun if I want a full sized lever but this little gun does just nicely in the pack or under my pillow at night in the backcountry.

i of course saw that after ordering from steves lol.

Has anyone here ordered these through Brownells yet?? How'd that turn out?? Sorry, I'm not on CGN.

I know this is a thread necro, what sights are those and where do you get them?
I just filed my original rear sight after putting the full butt stock on.

I posted about this because I talked to quite a few owners who had similar issues, glad to help!

My father inlaw has one.....he packs it with him when he hunts early season elk in the mountains with his bow.....he calls it,"his Bear Spray".
I think the model with the case colored action and a custom exhibition walnut stock would be Sick!....ive thought about getting it done, but cheaped out

Is there someplace in Canada that I can get the sights? I picked up a butt stock and with a bit of sanding to make it fit it will be good.

I can't help thinking that given the short distance between sights, a red dot would be a great accurizing feature?
