Each to his own, but I wouldn't put make-up on a pig. An SKS is what it is... An old style soviet era military rifle. I wouldn't alter it, change the stock, etc. Its good for blasting off a bunch of rounds in some green zone meadow, or perhaps as a home defense weapon. It's semi-auto and looks a bit scary to an untrained eye. A CBC reporter would call it an assault rifle or a machine gun. Just what you want.

I have one SKS, Tula 1951. It only has one modification, a pin in the magazine. I bought 3 of them , all happened to be Tulas. The ugliest one happened to be the best grouping so I sold the rest. I can't imagine any mod actually improving one. But then, I think the same of my SMLE, and M44. This means it is simply my taste in MIL surps. They are cheap and plentiful, so mod away or buy modded.

You can pick this set up for about $100 cheaper if you buy it separated and don't mind waiting for the stock to come in the mail. Agreed that the sks is no Cadillac but it's fun and cheap to shoot. If you can find one that doesn't stink your locker up I'd be surprised. I hate that stench

I noticed that even the simplest modded SKS (plastic stock, plastic tube cover, plastic mag, bayonet removed) is the whole full 1 kilo lighter than the one I left "original"! This alone makes it way more manageable - and enjoyable - for smaller women or teenagers. Adjustable stock and comfortable grips also help in the same direction. My wife immediately placed her first shots right in the middle of the target - something she did not even pretend to try with the "original". A few more tweaks may help for general ease of handling and recoil reduction (the "negligible" recoil for strong man can still spoil the fun for a small person).
