Default Mossberg 500. Thoughts?

Looking to buy shotgun, my first was a Mossberg flyway ultmag, but i sold it to my brother. I was looking into the Weatherby PA-08 but I wanted it in wood finish and those only come in 20 gauge. Id have to get it in black synthetic or camp, which is fine but id prefer a wood grain so thats where the mossberg 500 comes in. Just wondering who has experience with them, Ive read some reviews online and Ive heard they are great. its in the price range I'm looking to spend. Would you recommend I get the 500 or is the weather by PA-08 better than I should just suck it up and get it in the black or camp.

any other shotgun models/brands in the similar price range of the 500 are also welcome.

Great no frill shotgun for the price.

870's are also a solid choice in/around the same price.

Pick them both up and see which one you like.

Never owned a 870. But have a few buddies with them. Have had a few 500's and they work well for me cycles every round I've tried and has yet to jam on me. You won't be disappointed

my brother-in-law has the 870, Ive shot it a couple times and liked it too. I think lean towards the 500 because I like the location of the safety and the action release control.

If I were looking again for a cheaper pump gun. It would be either the 500 or 870. So being you prefer the 500. Giver. Heard they were at p&d for $325 right now. With a few chokes.

Either one of those guns are excellent, I have owned Mossberg 500 and the cheaper but nearly identical maverick 88. Flawless guns, I have also owned a weatherbee pa-08 in 12 gauge WITH WOOD, excellent gun. they call it the upland I believe. Price is pretty close to the same for both. I think tho that the "more rough and tumble, actually used frequently in the field, no need to worry about dirt" gun would be the mossberg.

The US military used Mossberg pumps as their issue combat shotgun for a long time.

You cannot go wrong with a Mossberg 500 and the last time I looked P&D had some crown grade models available as well as the plain Jane model

Yup. If it's good enough for the military...

I own two 500s and I love them. Ergonomically superior in my mind too with the placement of the safety and slide/bolt release.

Default Sxp?

Just out of curiosity has anyone tried the Winchester SXP? I saw a couple sitting at my local gun shop and wondered if they might be a good option now that Remington seems to have thrown the QC on their Express models out the window.

I'm a fan of the weatherby sa-08, I imagine the pa-08 would be a fine shotgun as well. I dont like mossberg one tiny bit. They feel cheap, and don't fit me at all.
870's are in my mind, the go to shotgun when you don't really know what to buy. They seem to fit most people and are built well.
I tried out buddies SXP last fall. It was an ok shotgun. Seemed to beat me up a bit more than the weatherby.

I had a Rem 870 issued to me and own an Moss500 personally. I find for me the "felt" recoil is much less than the Mossberg. Pretty much I shoot it way better and can shoot it for longer than the 870. Maybe its just a me thing but that's why I bought it. I do find the 870 easier to field strip for cleaning than the Mossberg, but I have more experience with the 870 as it was an issue gun. You won't go wrong with either one so pick the one that feels best to you!

Another question. Which of the 500s do you have? The classic or the field pump version? I'm probably going for the classic

Unsure what it's called. 28" barrel. 4 chokes and fake wood. Cheap.

Ditto. My brother in law has a 20 and a 12. Both have worked well for him. My first outing with my 500 saw a catastrophic failure of the forend within 50 rounds. Cabelas took it back.

Colin.
