All in fun. Interesting you brought up the 270 wsm. Been thinking about getting one. I've held back due to hearing some negatives about short action magnums but others will say zero issues whatsoever for years. The more I read about the cartridge the more I like the thought of one but damn. Does a guy really need a 270, 270wsm, and a 7mm mag? Ok dumb question.

Good thing we weren't comparing the wsm version to the 06 though. Blows me away what it's capable of. Might even ditch both 7mms to buy one and that's about the last thing I thought I'd ever say.
Gosh the jealousy is thick around here.

Lol, it is good fun. I started with .270 and then decided i wanted another couple hundred yards potential, like easy 600+ wasn't enough, then went back to .270 as there was no way in heck i would ever use 8-900 yard potential so just overkill for me, and now i've gone even further the other way. I see the .270 wsm as a true 800+ yarder and the 6.5 prc would be the competition to it now. I'd vote .270 wsm between the two just to buck the trend a little bit and you know i'm a fan of 6.5's and .270's.

Just to throw a “kick in the guts” into the fray, the .308 win will do it all, with less recoil on top, out to any reasonable hunting distance. So if it will, the .270 will as well (and the .260 rem, 7-08, .30-06, etc)!

Had most of them like many of you..currently playing with a 7mmrem...initial loads with no pressure signs are:

175gr NP.......3100fps
160grNP.........3250 fps
140gr ttsx......3325fps
139gr lrx.........3325fps

All these loads are .35 -.80 for 5 shot groups. The 175gr load with that speed and balistics etc should work on anything in NA. I cannot remember but I think I am no more than 1.5" high at 100m with any of those loads to be pretty much on at 300m..the trajectory is flat way out to 700m I think... but I am only practiced to 400m and that is pretty far in my books...I am still sneaky enuf to close under 200m even with the extra 50lbs I am carrying..ha ha

Wow. Thats sending some heat. Built in advantage...blazing up your surroundings during low light conditions and blinding your quarry.

I can picture herds of elk running head on into trees.

I shoot a 7mmstw, producing more velocity , and I have to be 2-1/2" high at 100 to be zeroed at 300 yards with a 140gr bullet . And I doubt that your loads are within SAMMI pressures to produce those velocities, especially the 160gr load. My max 7mmstw 160gr load with a 26" barrel is producing 3300fps, at 3250fps you are producing almost 200fps more than most people are seeing with the 7mmremmag.

That is true I am above sammi.....historically when the big 7 first came out some factory 175gr loads were around 3100fps...then they loaded it down...safe with my gun and a 24" tube...my 7weatherby was about 3425 - 3450 with 140gr ttsx with no pressure and room to grow... I always go up carefully by .5gr

Many people consider 150+fps faster than the reputable load data, to be a pressure sign.

The first pressure sign is velocity the second, people saying no pressure sign in there post. I haven’t noticed any traditional pressure signs until about 10k over but not seeing it dosn’t mean it’s not there. How do I check for pressure? Start low work up measure speed with labradar put into quick load with rifle specific data adjust variables to match atmospheric and fps read computer simulated data. Is it 100% perfect no, But it’s better than going grossly over max and claiming no pressure because the ejector and extractor aren’t clearly stamped onto the brass. Over the years I’ve gotten tired of having no pressure signs and no brass life and a stream of barrels being ordered to replace burnt pipes that “had no pressure signs” now I stay below the red line if you need that 150-fps that bad just buy the next rifle up that’s why they made them.

The 270 is a fine cartridge for elk it’s very adaptable and reliable I wouldn’t hesitate to use it on elk or moose I prefer the 130’s in a 270 for an all around load.

It absolutely smashed a ewe this year, not much of a test but not sure i've witnessed one of those tip over backwards drt's in person before. 16" barrel, 170 yards, 8300' elevation, impact velocity 2130 fps, just not much of a test, offside front quarter not much to salvage despite pretty small in and outs. Thought it may be the first bighorn with the cartridge too but alas a fellow in the u.s. had his son kill a ram at 85 yards drt, same eld-m i use. My ewe likely the second bighorn from what i could find...that guy carries that little Grendel now on his own sheep hunts so it's earned his respect along the way. He's a well known cougar guy, did some national geo stuff etc. Boone Smith. Anyway, now you know the story of the first bighorn grendel...and maybe the second, and also the first moose.

I would be very wary of those loads. My 160 NP load max FPS is 3100. I would check if I were you, stay safe.

In all seriousness, 4 Yukon grizzlies taken to date by a guide/friend of mine, all with 270. Maybe Mr O'Connor wasn't off his nut afterall.
YEP have had one in the small arsenal since the 1970s,killed Bear Deer elk caribou moose .Still my #1 gun.

That just about nailed it !.. There is no need to be guessing at pressures as a close approximation will always be better. Its hard to understand all the hype
and chatter about cartridges, powders and bullets when one of the best internal and external ballistic data programs out there is being overlooked by most reloaders. Choose any cartridge you like - but be sure of it`s repeatable capabilities in any given situation .. and there is no software for that.

Spot on and very well said. Never ceases to amaze me how many people claim they are getting 300 fps more than the load manual because their gun is "special". The only thing special is the guy loading them. The numbers Stob posted matches what my 7 Rum does and this isn't the foiirst time he posted those numbers nor the first time he has been called on being WAY over pressure. Run those through Quick load and you will see what I mean.

Just curious.. what powder are you using to get those same velocities with your 7 Ultra Mag

Default 270 win vs. elk.

I’ve taken 8 moose with my 270. 140 grain Hornady Interlok. They went down just the same as if I had shot them with a 375.

Retumbo and 7828 ssc is what I typically use in the RUM and even with a 28" barrel it just hits the 7 Rem Mag numbers published above for the 160 and 170 bullets.

For many years, the Remington 7600 - pump in .270 was the most common rifle on the Alberta/Saskatchewan prairies. Every kid wanted a flat-shooting rifle with which they could jack in more shells without their eye ever leaving the target - be it coyote, deer, or elk, hightailing it across the fields. Watching those puffs of dust and adjusting lead accordingly made those prairie boys the best off-hand, running target shootists in the country.
