Helped a guy move an approx. 2,200 lb safe. He simply used an engine hoist, floor jack, couple pieces of 2x4 and a pry bar.
Depending were you are going, stairs, narrow hallway, etc., 500 lbs should be pretty easy with a proper dolly or harness.
Also, the door comes off most safes, which makes them considerably lighter.

Call wingenback. They move our safes when we build banks and basically anything we don't want to break our backs on.

moving a safe
First thing is to remove all the gold & silver bullion, then any cash.

In the past, I have just taken the door off. Takes off around 200 pounds, then just use an appliance dolly. Wasn't bad at all.

Wingenback specialises in this type of moving. They do it for most of the Big Banks in Canada and have all the right gear to do it properly, including the sheet metal ramps to ensure you don't bust through the floor etc.

I moved last year and needed to move a safe. A local tool rental company had stair climbing dollies for rent that use a 12V battery and literally climb up and down stairs with your safe loaded on them. It cost me $60 for the day and I had a couple buddies come over just to be sure the balance was good. I likely could have done it alone with the unit.
I rented it from The Rental House in Leduc.

Which is it 500, or 1,000 lbs. That's a substantial difference for a wimp like me. Up to 700lbs isn't too bad for 3-4 guys. Throw a strap around the bottom, for stairs, put down some blankets and give er hell.

If moving it with buddies, be sure that someone in the group has experience in moving heavy things, you don't want anyone getting hurt. Also don't have a reluctant 'weakest link' among the crew. I have to move all kinds of heavy boilers and commercial water heaters and those powered stair climber units are awesome. I've done plenty of moves with just manpower and a dolly but that gets old real quick. Some moves we'd even have an extra guy at the top with a rope wrapped around an extremely strong point tied back to the dolly to act as a safety. as you generally can't fit more than two guys at either the top or bottom of a dolly thats a limiting factor. Some dolly's also have a set of kick-out wheels that allow the load to be tilted back and support the load with no weight on the person steering the dolly; we had one like this at my Dad's company and it was rated for 1000lbs and weighed in at about 90lbs by itself. If taking the manpower route make sure everyone is warmed up and well-stretched before the lift (assuming stairs).
I know a fellow who specializes in safe and piano moves in Calgary (he's moved many safes for WSS) but I can't help you for Edmonton.

its just from the main floor of a business to my garage so no stairs, just need to figure out how to load and unload it safely . the electric dolly might work i will call them and ask thanks
as for the weight i cant find the exact model on their site but i was able to google the one similar in size and specs from the same brand, its appear to be 800 lbs so i figure it would be in that range.
just check with united rental has the battery-powered dolly for up to 1500 lbs for $100 a day
thanks as always AO is full of knowledgeable folks

You may want to get a toe jack to get the safe onto the dolly... Save your back some.

I happen to own a battery powered stair climbing dolly, made by Escalera that's rated for around 1600 lbs. I have used it to move vending pop machines and commercial fridges up stairs, also moved a 1000 lb safe. its one slick unit. PM if you want use it.

if you need to moved a big heavy safe for a reasonable price ....
so just to update and incase anyone has to move a big heavy safe, i highly recommend calling Derek @daillocksmith/safeworld very knowledgeable and professional has all the right tools for the job ( the safe was a little big to get it out of the door .. they made it work) and i grossly underestimate the weight by 1800lbs , but they had that cover as well .
and a big thanks for Ddawg for his generous offer of the dolley
