Default Yukon

Any one that can tell me about daily life in the Yukon on here. My GF and I are looking to move there in a year or two.

Where? Different life for different areas.

I lived in Whitehorse for 5 years.

Thanks guys. Well I'm not sure where. I grew up on a farm in central Sask, closest town was 500 people. So would be looking for relatively the same situation. Any towns of that size that would see the midnight sun, and also have housing and work?

As already stated it depends on where in the Yukon.I lived in a hiway lodge for 15 years and then in Whitehorse for another 10 years.

Lived there for 5 years. If you like fishing and hunting and just the outdoors. GO ANYWHERE! I'm planning a trip back in a couple years to see that country again, I miss it.

Mulie -

For the most part, if you are willing to work, there is work to be had.

Whitehorse - being about 23000 people - is the government center. LOTS of gov't workers. Also, very very tough to find housing and when you do it's $$$. The old mentality of the territory saw restricted development, and the modern territory faces a LOT of NIMBYism.

There are some lot lotteries so that might be a way to get housing (but you still have to live somewhere in the interim).

Watson Lake, not much for work. Dawson, work in the summer, not much in the winter. Haines Junction/Mayo/ Faro all small but little work.

Again, if you are willing to work, it's there but you might have to look. Housing is the big issue, IMO.

I would go back but the winters are just too long. The short summer doesn't make up for the length of winter

I'm not too fussy where I live but would prefer to be in the far north during summer at least to see the midnight sun. But with some of the comments on housing/work ect... it may choose where I live. Its just food for thought right now.

You will get near 24 hour daylight in most areas of the Yukon. You can always go to Old Crow, but I don't know what you'd do there

Dawson is a really cool town but like I said, very little work come winter. Most summer work is either at gold operation or tourism related. GREAT people there, they take care of their own. Be prepared to drink, though.

It is also very cold in Dawson in the winter with a LOT of ice fog. Summer can top 40 C + (go figure).

Doesn't sound that bad, where I grew up in Sask I seen 42C and -48C. Just sounds like I need to find work and housing the rest I think I can handle.
