Default Amazon fire tv stick.

Anyone using the Amazon Fire tv stick to stream tv shows?

Good or bad, can you get local tv with it like global or CTV?

We have one, seems to work ok with my sports apps, but u will still need a provider pkg to view regular TV.
Unless someone knows of a way around that.

Check and see if you can pick up local channels in your area with a antenna. In Calgary I get 6 local channels including global and CTV, with just a cheap $30 antenna.

Soplayer. Dream tv. It’s an app you get.

I have no tv provider on internet. View all sports and kids channels we need

I have the 4k one and even if you don't have a 4k tv and stuff spring for that one. Global and CTV and CBC all have apps for it not sure what they are like I have an antenna for local . You can also get all the streaming options ,plus you can side load others apps like say *cough * kodi not that I know anything about that
Edit to add IMHO bang for buck the firestick 4k is the best deal and I think I have tried them all but the Nvidia Shield

You can buy a cheap antenna for $30 and get HD local channels. In Edmonton with my crappy location that doesn't really face towers too well I get CTV, CBC, Global, YES and City. At Pigeon Lake we can get all those channels crystal clear.

There are many of us so called cord cutters out there. Firesticks are ok but since it is an Amazon based product you have to live within their parameters. If you are basic user they are not bad.
A good Android box and a little bit tech savvy and you xan stream pretty much anything. Web streaming, apk or kd all work great with the right setup and inexpensive.
The Shield is near the top of the streaming world. The biggest thing is from a hardware point of view they are ahead of the curve so you wont need to upgrade soon.
If you have a decent antenna for the local stations they are native hd so awesome picture. Just dont go for the cheapest or you may be disappointed. I have mine in my attic and works great for local stuff.
I use the Android boxcmethod in combo with all the above. I watch all the local stuff by antenna or some apps have it but not quite as good of quality, watch all our shows, movies Flames, Sportsnet, Tsn UFC etc all in hd and live.

Pick your poison.

Just adding my 2 cents again I did not have much luck with the boxes and one thing to point out if you want to use Crave TV some of the programs they have will not work on a jail broke box .The other thing with the stick was I got them on a black Friday sale 35 bucks hard to go wrong so far has handled everything I have thrown at it.I do want to point out if you already have one you can get all of this on an Xbox one, might be a little less user friendly but if you have one already

No rreason to jail brake anything. They all work off android with no changes required. Phone, tablet, box all work just a well if you know how to do it. As I said Firesticks are pretty good but have limitations. Most of this content including movies tv and sports is just on regular internet if you know where to locate it so you do not need any apps at all if you want. All these things do is provide links to content that is already there. Even with your stick join one of the groups and filelinked and you will have all the content you will ever need.

As a few people on the site know I am a rep for a well known Android streaming box.
We do have a box available that bench marks higher than the Nvidea Shield. This means performance wise our box is faster and the CPU runs cooler.

We have 3 Fire Sticks as well. For the limited amount of programming we watch/need, they're great. Plus they're small enough that you can take them on the road with you when travelling.

We went from paying $100+/month for Telus satellite, to around $60 (granted we piggy back Netflix from my in-laws) and with that we have subscriptions to Amazon prime obviously, Sportsnet Now, Crave, Disney+, StackTV (which gives you live and on demand TV with Global, Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada, W Network, HISTORY®, Adult Swim, Slice, Showcase, National Geographic, Teletoon, Treehouse, and YTV)

Yes I believe so. My wife does most of it.
But it has everything and I was able to cancel Netflix
Overall savings ~$90 a month.

We use the Amazon Fire stick. It's great for us. we stream netflix, disney and amazon tv through it.
I have watched local shows aswell. we just click on the app and it opens up. and plays. Downside I have found with using the local channels is that they still play advertisements.

One downside to the Amazon stick I have found is that our Data usage has gone through the roof. We have 550 gb on out Telus plan and up until we got the fire stick we never hit over 200 gb a month. Since then it has crept up monthly till yesterdays bill period almost used all our data.

I looked into it and even when the stick and tv is turned off it still uses data to push shows that you might be interested in. The site I looked on had users saying to unplug the device when not in use, otherwise it uses your data.

I'm going to try it and see how the bill looks for this period.

You might want to ask me what I sell subs for....Considerably less..

I do run Amazon Fire TV Stick and it is excellent. It will operate up to 4K. I don't have a 4K TV yet, but I can certainly vouch for the quality of its 1080P HD streaming. Working wirelessly, it comfortably outperforms the streaming. Another incredible advantage of streaming sticks, like Roku and Fire is that if you change your TV, you take them with you. I have read stories recently about people who bought 'smart' TVs a few years ago only to find that they aren't so smart any more because the suppliers no longer support them.

We brought our USA purchased amazon FireStick back with us to Alberta. Unfortunately access to many of the viewing options are denied “being only available to locations in USA states”. We have ordered a Canadian version so will see how that goes.

Our daughter loves the Amazon FireStick and has reduced tv service to the basic cable option in Grande Prairie.

Our Sony smart tv in USA works great with the FireStick. Pretty much can use Alexa for everything on the tv down there. But being much much less technically advanced than our grandchildren we struggled with the learning curve.

We do not have smart tv in Alberta so Cannot use many of those options here.
