Started a new bait site last week and was surprised today when I saw that the coyotes never found it yet. Then I checked my snares and I had caught four. I picked up another two at a couple of other sites for six total. All really nice ones with no mange, mites or red belly. Happy about that check!

The next few days are supposed to be relatively mild.....good snare hanging weather......followed by colder weather. Fresh snow and tracks = Good times.

I doubt much will be moving in 100 km winds. at least you don't have to worry about the birds getting them.

Dont say that Dave , we all know what happened the last time you mentioned birds . lol . It seems my bait lasts forever at my sites after I start catching at it , the dogs dont get too close even when its really cold out . Birds consume most of it . Im not saying that I catch all of them before they get to it , but it seems they are much more weary than before . Anyone else have this happen ?

If you catch one of these in the coyote snare is it an accidental catch

The coyotes seem to be moving pretty good haven't had bait in two weeks spence my source takes two weeks at Christmas off. Picked up 11 after work today and only checked half my baits. Was pretty happy with that. Still no more foxs.

I pretty much spent the last week in the skinning shack with no time to hang additional snares. Now, thanks to my lovely Daughter, I caught her flu and although I feel weak and dizzy, I still have work that has to be done in there.

I usually work longer hours when required to get my fur put up in order to keep on top of things but I only want to do what is absolutely necessary today. I have two thawed coyotes that need to be skinned (that will be done) and four pelts rolled up on the cold shed floor that need fleshing. With the other two that'll make six total.

Can anyone give me any guidance as to how long those rolled pelts will be good for before they start slipping? The floor must be about 5 degrees or so (?) and the shed about 10 degrees. Will the pelts last a day or two on the floor or should I freeze them until I'm sure that I can put them up? Thanks.

Finally felt well enough to do checks today. Caught three but one with mites and lost one to birds (non repairable). Still light headed and weak so the bad coyotes stayed put. Kinda relieved that I didn't have to carry them out.

I give up, way too miserable today. Checked one bait got two. I spent more time thawing my hands out in the truck than I did setting.

If your weather was anything like ours you're a lot more hardcore than I am! :

Cold, high winds and snow......a good old blizzard at times. The wind actually blew a semi trailer over on the Hwy near here. I'll be hanging snares and adjusting others in the upcoming milder weather.

Yeah they closed a couple highways in the area. Pretty darn miserable out there. I didn't get much accomplished this days off due to family responsibilities and I'm back to work tomorrow. I was determined to get this bait setup properly again. Lots of unset Rams at this one. I did manage to get it set up again. I had planned on doing more but came to my senses.

I'll be working through the upcoming warmer weather.

Are you left with any bad left on the cable or are both end releasing and the BAD is completely gone? Had a few deer let go this year and all but one the BAD was completely gone.

One end releasing, the end on the cable. Who ever came up with this idea of breakaways needs a big pat on the back .

I have a 45" bull moose at one of my baits and we have been getting along just fine all winter... i walk around him and he just ignores me.. that was until last night. That dumb bastard managed to step into 7 of my 15 snares.. 2 just knocked down but 5 breakaways released with snares destroyed! I get there and he just gives me a look and goes and lays down. Mr Moose and i are going to have a talk!

I feel your pain buddy , Ive never had a BAD opened in 3 years of snaring and have had a dozen in the past week . Oh well , they are just doing what they are supposed . Ironic how a guy cant find a moose in the fall and now has one wreaking havoc on his coyote snares ?? Hope he leaves you alone soon .

Default Calling coyotes

Somewhat new to calling coyotes tried today for a few hours with no luck. Didn't even see one. I know they are here I can hear them every night it seems. How long should a guy sit in the same area after calling? Should you move? Any ideas would be helpful.

Hi Brecoop. You should post this in the Hunting section. There are a lot of hunters there to give you tips.

Been a slow week for me. Major weather change down south here -30 to +3 in three days. Fresh bait today so should get it rolling again.

Seem to have done the mange a favor in the area, last bunch have been good again finally. Went through a couple weeks at 75% toss away.

Dave, dont think those two would get inside my shed.

You'd turf them because of some mange on the tail? The tail doesn't matter so you can cut it right off. If you are throwing those ones out you're throwing away money. They ended up being okay and I skinned them tonight. A wash and some Borax to the red belly and I should get decent coin for them at auction.

Here are pictures right after combing:

Rat Tail. Other than the tail the elbows were bare. Some red belly.

Second coyote with the start of mange on the tail. Some red belly but that was it.

Slow here too now that the weather has warmed. One today but a good one. They had been passing this bait on the river so I threw out a ribcage and a leg bone. They were cleaned up today and she must have left the ice looking for more

I got out and did a check tonight. Just three coyotes and two were mangey. Some of my spots were blown in pretty bad and it was a bit of an adventure getting into them. The kids had a great time though they love busting through snow drifts in the truck lol. It's easy to laugh and giggle when you're not the one running the shovel if you get stuck I guess.

Crashing through snow drifts with the kids......Awesome! I did a little of that yesterday doing my checks. I love those new DuraTraks!

Shed day/night for me so no checks. Checks and hanging snares at two new baitsites tomorrow and then more shed time. 21 dogs to skin. So glad that you guys told me to freeze the pelts and do them later, it took a lot of pressure off. I wasn't thinking and was way too busy for a supposedly retired guy.....lol.

I had a little mishap yesterday that didn't concern me too much but it does a bit today. I fell in a dead pit and scratched the back of my wrist up on the bare ribs of a cow that were sharp from coyotes chewing on them. When I got home I scrubbed it up with hydrogen peroxide but it's festering up and looks a little weird. De-scabbed and scrubbed it again tonight but no bubbling from the H2O2. Maybe just inflammation? I had a tetanus shot last year but I'm wondering what kind of weird disease I could contract. I'll see what it looks like tomorrow I guess.

No good Dave!! Coyotes seem to be on the move again in my country. 4 in the last 2 days 2 really good, one rubbed and one mangy sucker. Finally had to try a fence line set and it worked like a charm. I've always avoided them in the past but may have to take a closer look in the future where there are no deer.

Seen all end of the mange spectrum this year from damn near naked to a polished nut sack. Currently at 25%.
