Question TPMS sensors

Hi folks,
We just bought a second hand set of winter tires with rims and we need to know how much it costs to reset the sensors? Getting a flashing tire pressure light and ran a scan on it, and that's what needs to happen.

Just go to a dealership and they’ll flash them for free. That’s been my experience anyhow.

Each vehicle is different, some will reset themselves.
Google your vehicle and it should tell you.

I know with some fords/lincolns, you just need to release pressure out of each tire, and the sensor resets itself.

My experience is it's not free unless you got the winters swapped over there.

Every car is different for the reset procedures. Some require a TPMS reset tool and other just require driving. You bought used wheels so there is no guarantee the senors in those rims will work with your specific model so you need to scan them and see if they are the correct ones. Sensors are not interchangeable between different vehicles for the most part but there can be some crossover parts that work.

If you happen to be driving through Calgary and want to stop in I will happily scan them for you and confirm if they are the right ones, and if so reset them as an AO favour!

I know some people just drive with the yellow light on and then off it goes when they switch back to their summer tires.

That’s what I do with the wife’s car. Kind of annoying but for a few months who cares. I check pressures by hand so I don’t rely on those stupid gauges anyhow.

I bought my winter wheels at Integra tire and they said that they would reset the car to read the sensors every tire change, except that their tool could not. So off to the Honda dealer, they did it for free once. After that it is $90 + tax each time, appointment and wait two hours, $190 per year! So that is nonsense, I drive in winter with the light on covered by a post-it note. The scan and set tool is $400.

I just deal with the light. I also regularly check my own tire pressure, truth.

You can absolutely run without TPMS but obviously you need to be aware that your car will not tell you if a tire is losing air. When parked and coming out to a low tire it is easy, but I will say seeing when a tire starts losing air while driving, the sensor aspect is nice as it lets you know there is an issue before the tire gets destroyed. In today's day and age when cars are coming with tire sizes that can cost as much as $500 each or more, that can be a valuable feature, but that said we got by for over 100 years without TPMS sensors so it isn't like it is a requirement.

Another thing that you should be aware of, some cars (like our 2011 Honda Accord), when the TPMS light is on, it disables the traction control bypass button, so if you find yourself a little bit stuck in the snow, you will have a hard time getting out. This isn't on all vehicles, but it does happen on some so you want to make sure it isn't going to leave you high and dry.

I suggest that the ABS, SRS, and CEL lights should get tape over them also, no need for any of those items.
