Default What in the world kind of rifle is this?????

Hey guys! [and gals!]

I have the opportunity to be "grandfathered" a rifle, but am not sure whether it's worth all the paperwork. I'm a hunter, but not an expert on different types of rifles. Maybe you can help me identify exactly what this is:

Rifle identification markings are as follows:

Stamped on the barrel:
7mm Rem. Mag. (ok, that's quite obvious what that means!

Stamped on the action:
-Made in Germany
-Mauser-werke
-A.G. Oberndorf a.N. Mod.2000
-Original Mauser (this is stamped on the rear component of the bolt)

The rifle looks to be in quite nice shape and I don't see any obvious defects or signs of abuse. It apparently has not been shot much.

My question is: What exactly is this thing in terms of value and desirability?

Thanks!

Sounds like you have a nice Obendorf Mauser.
Does it have claw mounts on it, or standard mounts?
Also, is there a thumb cut - out on the left side of the action for using a stripper clip, and clip guides on the top of the action?

Default hmmmmmmmm....

I'm not seeing the characteristics that you're describing. I've done a bit of surfing on the web and I don't think the rifle is extremely rare or valuable. I was thinking though that the action might make for a good platform to build another caliber with. Many guys use Remington actions as a starting point to build customized rifles. Would the Mauser be in the same league?

Default Mod 2000?

For a minute I was confusing it with the modern model 94 (3 lug bolt)

Anyway, here you go:

I would keep it as is, it's in a decent cartridge, and you can get lots of mauser actions that are better to customize.

OK - please do elaborate. At the risk of seeming absolutely clueless, what am I missing here. Either this rifle is a piece of junk, or it's something I should grab. I've now seen these Mauser 2000's on-line valued at $250-350.00.

Default Mauser

It is not all that old, the 7mmRM came out in 1962.In 1962 you could buy a M700n rem for $169.99,At the time I would have picked the Mauser first. With the quality at REM I would probably do it now...jack

I was just saying a reference to a Mauser being in the same league as Remington, burns my eyes. You have a nice gun there and should keep it. I am sure it is not junk. That spot is taken.

Nice rifle, probably worth more than 350. in good shape, but not a real Mauser. , in spite of what it says, according to the site quoted. Just a Mauser action, made by Heym, a quality manufacturer, in their own right.

I see you have lots of info here about the rifle. I know nothing about the rifle but can speak to the paperwork. If it is a gift and has never been registered (a process I just went through) and you already have a pal, the paperwork is very simple. you can do most of it online and over the phone in less than 30 minutes.

Default ...thanks!...

...that's some good advice. I do have all the proper licensing so it should be a sinch. I was just browsing through the latest news on the registry. It seems that although it looks like registration of long-guns may cease in the future, for now, it's still required.
