Default Spring Lake sucks

I wondered why the other "regulars" have been avoiding Spring Lake lately. The water is in beautiful shape, clear, no algae and not to warm, but much higher than previous years. Today confirmed why, the trout are just not interested. Managed just a 13 incher and two stockers.

Flyguy,

I haven't had time to fish it any where near as often this year as previous years but when out the results have been less than stellar.

I was out for a few hours on Friday and Saturday.

Similar results. One 12" to the boat. One 14" one a dragon nymph and had a nice one break off a leech pattern. Chucked all kinds of patterns and methods at them and very, very, slow.

Spoke to a couple others that had been skunked.

At times it has crossed my mind on a few trips out that maybe it's time to break out the pike gear and flies again to take a break from these damn fickle trout.

Maybe time to try Salter's, Star or Muir?

I'm excited about backswimmer and boatman season approaching but Spring lake fishes have not really keyed on to these patterns the past couple of years. At least in my experience.

Maybe this year will be different?

For me, Muir has not been kind either. I have been out once a week since May 1 and managed only 1 nice brown trout. As I look around me, I do not see anyone else having much luck either.

Ouch, that really sucks. I guess my expectations are based on my fishing diary notes from previous years so one just has to adapt and be optimistic and patient. Still beats a day in the office (which I don't have to worry about now anyway) or weeding the garden!

Haven't been there in a few years so I am not sure they are still there but I used to catch some nice perch there too. If the trout aren't biting maybe try going deep for the perch... if they are still there.

I found a good place for the trout was in front of a beaver house that was along the NW shoreline. Not sure the beaver house is even there anymore either.

No perch any more.

Only the remains of the beaver lodge are left. That area is now a favourite of a certain group of shore fishers, who probably fill their white buckets with stockers for soup.

Mr flyguy, you took the **** out of me last year when I said a similar thing about spring lol, haven’t been skunked there this year (yet), that being said I’ve found I have to work a lot harder to catch compared to previous years, streamers stripped at speed seem to be my go to now, on two occasions I’ve drifted towards the old beaver dam, there have been anglers there on the shore but as soon as I got within eye sight they hurriedly packed up and took off, me being a bit too suspicious maybe

I haven't been skunked yet either but, as you say, really have to work at it and haven't have a double digit day (>10 fish) since May.

Like you, at this time of year they seem to like a fast stripped fly. My go to is an olive body wooley bugger with brown/pearl flash tail, brown palmered hackle and gold bead.
