Default First Antelope Experience!!!

Well What Can I Say my Antelope hunt that's I've been looking forward to for many years has come and Gone.

Trip started out Saturday morning making our way south into the Zone spotted several pockets of animals all a long ways from the roads most groups of Antelope were spotted over a Mile away. Started marking on the map of all the locations we spotted Animals and making calls and visit to the Ranchers. Never had any issues gaining permission it was really nice to see the Ranchers were actually making me Sign a permission document.

Day 1 of Scouting ended finding our selves low on fuel we starting searching around finding out we would have to travel 80Km to the nearest town for Fuel we talked with some locals and found out if we went to a small near by town and talked to the Hardware Store owner he would sell us some fuel. Pictures tell the story.

Day 2 we put on 800Km traveling through the zone learning more info every mile gaining permission and knowledge of the area. By the end of the day we had a pretty solid plan for the morning.

Day 3 the Opener came we headed on the route that I wanted to take right off the bat we spotted a group of 7 Antelope one looked pretty good from near a mile away so we decided we had better take a closer look, We started our Stalk across the prairies using the hills to get closer all of a sudden look over and were being stared down by a Doe we drop to the ground thinking were busted. The doe goes back to feeding and here comes the buck we thought looked turns out he wasn't worth taking for my first Antelope a few minutes later we are looking at a herd of 40 antelope with no Shooters in the group.

We back out and head to the truck as we get the to truck a Fish & Wild life officer is sitting waiting for us, went over my Tags all good nice to see an Officer out.

We continue to our next location and spot a good buck we proceed to make a plan and start our stalk. We crest the hill and Crawl into a good shooting position at 358Yards. The buck is bedded at this point in a good spot we decide to wait him out and end up deciding that I'm confident I can make this shot I Take am and make a well placed shot with my 270WSM.

My hunt couldn't have been any better we had ample time to gain permission and knowledge of the area its a Shame it took 14 years to actually go on my hunt and cant wait to go with Archery Tackle in a few years.

Congrats on the buck. The sad part is that now you will likely have to wait twenty years to draw again. I plan on drawing next year, with two fiends that have never hunted pronghorn, and that will likely be my last ever pronghorn hunt.

Yah its pretty sad to wait 14 years to draw a tag and in the same motel a couple guys roll in from BC using the Outfitter and getting to hunt the same animals as me. Frustrating to say the least its about time our province starts taking care of Residents.

Congrats Andrew!
The solution to waiting is to go somewhere else and pay a bunch of cash to an outfitter - makes nose sense at all for residents does it?

Congrats on your antelope!

If you want to hunt them every year you can drive another 4-6 south and hunt them in Montana for $1500-2000. Pretty cheap really when you factor in your hotel, food, fuel and scouting time.

First off to the OP, great goat man, congrats!

And to the above point, anyone is more than welcome to drive to wyoming and hunt antelope without using a guide. Honestly, from where I was hunting antelope this year, another 6-7hrs would have put me in wyoming where there are 10X the amount of goats. I plan on doing exactly that in the next year or 2....at the end of the day, a guy could take advantage of that opportunity and hunt pronghorns every year for an extra half day driving from our border zones.

For every opportunity others have here, we have the same elsewhere if your willing to go for it.

Edit - I missed torks post, he beat me to it.

Congrats on the great buck! Crossing my fingers for next year! Love the pics of the small southern towns! Passed through Etzikom, Orion, and Manyberries last weekend. Were you staying in Foremost?

Not disputing that you can hunt in Wyoming if elsewhere whiteout s guide but it still entails a pile of cash anf extra travel time .

Boyd's store is a one of a kind for sure. A small film maker from Ontario went through Orion and made a short Doc about Boyd and Orion. Worth a watch, it probably parallels a lot of small slowly dying towns in Alberta. Here's the link.

Thanks for sharing that, being there and having had the great opportunity to interact with Boyd is something you never forget. I liked the Sunshine Girl pictures he had signed and some of the celebrity signed photos he had pasted on the walls....definitely a lot of history in that one little store.

Congrats. I see they updated the fuel pumps since I was there last, we stayed across the road in a tent. The pump he had then was the old style that you fill up the glass globe on the top of the pump and siphon into your truck.
