Smile Fishing the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes This Weekend

Hi everyone,

I'm going camping this weekend at Boulton Creek in Kananaskis and I was hoping to find some time to fish the edges of the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes. This is my first time out there....

Do you guys have any suggestions on what to use or where to go? I'm thinking streamers...

I would really appreciate some input, you can also PM me if you don't want to share the info with the world

Thanks!

Streamers are a decent choice, particularly if you are hoping to hook up to the bull trout. But, the cuts and rainbows will also be feeding on chironomids and mayflies. There are lots of both available to the fish and nymph imitations of both can be good at any time.

oh okay! Awesome! Thanks for the info!

How is the fishing in the evening or early morning?
I'm hoping to go out before or after a hike.

One method I find that works well is using micro leeches under an indicator.

I use two or three about 14" apart and I try to use three separate colours. Switch out if one colour is picking up most of the fish. Add some split to get it down fast and try to fish the last fly close to bottom.

Time of day - depends.
Early in the year in higher lakes, midday is often best. Insect activity is often temperature dependent, and so is fish activity. When the aquatic insects are active fish that feed on them are too. I've had very good midday fishing and slow early and late day fishing at K-country lakes, particularly when the weather is cool to cold. The opposite can happen when the days are hot and bright.

There is no such thing in fishing as always, so you never know. But overall activity definitely is tied to water temperature and insect activity.

Hello

Ice is off Upper Kananaskis Lake. However the cold water and lack of insects makes it very difficult to fly fish this time of year. End of June or early July is always a better time to fly fish there.
Scenery is spectacular with the snow and runoff occurring. Photos from Sat, June 3 are attached.

Cheers,

Nickolas

Yes, I agree, it was great last weekend! I tried going fishing Sunday morning but unfortunately I got skunked oh well better luck next time!.... in a couple weeks

We went for a walk Saturday at dusk and we saw so many schools for cutts roaming around the shores and some even jumping! on the upper and lower lakes, I couldn't believe how close to the shore they were!

The Cutts are in spawning mode and would like a nice creek full of good gravel to lay their eggs in. Since good creeks are in short supply they will build test redds along the shore if they find some rocks that are about the right size. That is why they are grouped up on the shore
