Default Checking the status of your PAL with Bank Information???!

So I've been helping my retired father renew his PAL.
He has sent it in (hard copy paper form) some weeks ago and hasn't heard back and was concerned that his cheque for the $60 wasn't cashed. I told him you could check the status online which I have done before in the past.
He asked if I would check for him, going from the RCMP/CFO website it said to login using your online banking password and information???

Really?

My dad doesn't do online banking and this just seemed sketchy as all get out to me.

What's up?

It’s normal as anything government related.

The online banking system is about as secure as anything out there, so the government has piggybacked onto it as a cost savings, I’m guessing(ya I know).

Don’t read too much more than that into it.

And yes you are true my screwed if you don’t online bank.

Have you tried old school, pick up the phone on a week day, during business hours.

You can use a G key for service Canada, I had to go this route because I bank through a credit union not included in the sign on partner deal

I can't offhand remember what's required to get one but in wasn't hard.

They don't cash your cheque until the pal is approved. His application is probably sitting in a pile of countless other applications waiting to be processed.

Would you rather it be less secure so that anyone who knows your name birthday and vague history can check out if you have a firearms licence? I agree that they could maybe figure out a non-bank type of confirming that I am me, but I am happy for the security vs lack of.

You used to be able to check the status of your application online without using bank information. I forget what the criteria was to check on it, but I know I have done it in years gone by and definitely didn't give bank information because I didn't do online banking.

And No, I'm not all that concerned about anyone knowing I have a firearms license, or a drivers license etc. Anyone who would know me well enough to hack my login would in the same fashion be able to hack my bank login too, same process!
Personally if I had to make that choice, I'd much rather have someone find out when my PAL renewal was approved rather than be able to hack and login to my online bank accounts!

Don't read too much into it. If you renew your pal online, you enter your online banking password as a security device, through your financial institution. If the application was mailed in, these measures were not used in the first place and likely would not work to check your application progress.
