Default Who's getting ready for archery elk?

Getting close! One more 8 day shift, which will leave me a couple days to drive up and do a little looking around, reconnecting with landowners etc and then its on. Hoping the weather holds up, been very lucky that way last few years. A little cooler, drier weather would be perfect but either way it'll be fun! Who else is getting fired up to go?

Yeah...why do I do it again? 3blade: 0, elk: 10 or 11 or whatever it is now. Stupid elk. And yet, off to the woods I go.

Got a new area scouted out over the weekend, lots of sign, looks like I missed the herd by a few short hours. Hoping to finally close the deal on one this year!

My area seems to hold silent elk...very little chat....my mistake the last couple of years was to assume they weren't around simply because I heard/saw absolutely nothing prior to opening day (including game cams). Both years I busted elk trying to get where I "thought" they would be. This year I'm hunting the SECOND out of camp.
17 days!!!!!

Yep stake your claim fellas. Good luck to all. It's dry and they gonna be thirsty and conditioned to their regular water holes till opening morning. The guys that did their due diligence and the odd lucky s.o.b will have instant success. The rest of us...well...I think we know how sheez gonna go....

Brodhead sharp, backpacking gear ready to rock. Permission all in place... Least two years I was lucky to fill my tag the first morning.. can't imagine it will be like that this year, but going in much earlier, and trying a new spot. I can taste it in the air already

You're going to get it done this year. That tag will be closed on an elk

This will be year 11 for me chasing stupid elk....
Every year the same thing... do all my homework, scouting , access permission,
Season comes and goes, see lots, not in range or not a legal bull...

Last year I almost closed the deal......

Hiked in to our spot on a nice ridge top before first light, set up. Had the coffee going, beautiful sunrise, did lots of glassing, hiked all over the place checking out meadows and valleys and at about 2:30pm we said, nothing around, lets had back to the truck and head home. Well we get almost all the way back to the truck, approx. a km out, and a buck busts out of the bush in front of us and goes down this steep hill to the east of us.... So I say to my buddy, going to go down the hill and see if I can get a look at him and I will circle back and meet you at the truck. so I head down the hill prob 150 yards and I get to a small clearing and I look over and at the edge a ELK is standing 40 yards away looking at me..... its head was high and I couldn't tell if it was a bull of not, then he moved his head and all the branches above his head started moving.... put is head down for a split second and I saw he was a 5x4. He was quartering toward and I fired and he took off. walked over and found a clump of hair and blood. my buddy cam over and we waited for about 45 min. started to track the blood, tracked till dark, came back first light the next day and tracked for about almost a 1km and the blood trail dried up, spent the next two days walking in huge circles at the end of the blood trail....he is still out there, hopefully we will see each other again this year and he is a 6x6!!! almost 150km on the boots last year! good luck everyone this year!

I always buy a tag in 410. Last year was the first time in 4 yrs that I saw a nice bull from a treestand, a beautiful full set of headgear. At 60yds I passed on the shot. Just too far and too much bush for a good shot for me. But boy I shimmied out of that stand in a hurry to follow him! He was faster, though!

I will definitely be out in the trees again come September.
