Default Yamaha Kodiak Starting Need Help!

Hope there are some Atv Yamaha tech on here.
I have a 2004 Yahama Kodiak 450. I lent to my son to use. He loaded it up and took it home, went for a few rides in the hills and they next day it would start.
I checked all the fuses and they all look good. I then ordered a new coil as i didn't have any spark, After replacing the coil I purchased a new plug. I placed the new plug in the cap and grounded it to the side of the frame, I still don't have any spark. I am in no means a certified mechanic and don't know what else to check. I checked all wire connection and they are all connected together

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Do you have some basic electrical tools? A multimeter or atleast a 12V test light?
Do you have key on, battery voltage to the ignition coil?

I had a similar problem on a 2005 Kodak 450. I did like you replaced the coil and fuses with no result Next I took the battery to battery world and had it checked. Even though there was enough power to turn motor over the battery never had enough power left for the other systems. I put in a new battery and was good to go. I had charged the crap out of the old battery but it was not charging to full. My advice borrow or buy another battery to try.

Did you replace spark plug boot when u did coil and plug?
To the coil is a green wire this should pulse voltage when cranked.

Kill switch shorted out? ( or in the off position). I did have a buddy that couldn’t start his grizzly. Until a neighbor came buy and switched it on. LOL. Wiring problem at key switch?

It could be electrical connections, u can pull apart random connections around the ignition switch, kill switch, CDI area or do a wiggle test sometimes it works.

It’s hard doing electrical testing on atvs with just a test light you need the ability to test ohms and voltage if you are able borrow a multimeter from a friend or neighbour. If it seems as if it’s going to involve testing the pulse coil or stator I’d be glad to help with specs.

I had one of the big main fuses close to the battery on my 700 blown and you couldn't tell it was blown until pulled.

I had that happen. Same thing lent it to a guy. He shut it off using the thumb switch. It ended up being corroded and I switched it a few times and it worked. I took it apart and cleaned the connections and it worked good.

Default Kodiak 450

I had the same year and model. One winter I was plowing snow and using winch to lift blade often. Quad just quit. It turned over great but no spark. After replacing plug and cap and any other checks I could do, I took it in. It was the CDI box under the seat that burnt out. Dealer said because my winch was grounded to the frame instead off battery this happened. I replaced the box and ran the ground cable to battery and never had any issues for another ten years.

Had the same problem with our Yamaha. After we checked the coil, and tried another CDI, it actually eneded up being the stator......and as my luck would have it, the stator was an aftermarket one that had to have two wires reversed. Once the mechanic figured that out, it started better than ever.

Have you tried pull starting? I had same issue with my 99 Big Bear and was a Pulsar Coil that is mounted in with the Stator. Would not start with battery and starter but would by pull starting.

Buddy and I had two yamaha same year and model .both stators failed on them just weeks apart from each other .
He replaced his and i , when i opened my side case found the open wire on the stator coil . I fixed it with a wirer connector and it worked for years after .

I would also check your kill switch and the handle bars ,as this was a fault i had on a motor bike (yamaha)

I wonder if he found out what the problem was. I am interested as I have the same machine and might run into the same problem.

I had the exact same problem. Had to replace the CDI twice before I figured out I needed to run a ground from the winch directly to the battery.
