Default inexpensive options for a good pistol

i am looking to get my first handgun soon...and i am wondering if folks have any suggestions for inexpensive..but well built handguns. i have shot many cz's and i love them...but they do cost a pretty penny....does the quality outweigh the price??

opinions??

oh looking at the 9mm/.45 range......

If inexpensive is a priority, the first thing that comes to mind is NORINCO. Their 1911's are cheap, sturdy and functional, but a little rough. A BC gunsmith (www.armco-guns.com) has sold a ton of them by importing new ones, giving them a reliability tune-up and selling them. And if you want to cutomize at a later date, there's nothing better than a 1911. He also has lots of used stuff, of all makes, for sale. And anything you buy from him, will have been checked out to be good shape and work.

i will have to check that out...but unfortunately 1911's usually don't work too well for me. i have smallish hands...and i find that 1911's usually feel a little sloppy in my hand...

Norinco makes CZ and Browning Hi-power clones also. Very reasonable. Check out Marstar for what is available.

My friend purchased a CZ clone. Is it a CZ? No, but he is quite pleased with it. I have looked at some of their guns, and they are identical to the original, even sound the same when you work their action. They are not as finely finished, but from what I hear, are very functional. If you want an original, you have to pay for it.

My friend ordered his Norinco from Marstar.

Default New Pistol

I just got into the IDPA pistol shooting this past summer @ our local range and bought a new Springfield Armoury XD40. Kit come with case, belt holster,2 magazines, magazine holder, speed loader, lock. I bought a couple extra mags so I have 5 in total with another belt magazine holder. I got mine with the olive colored grip. LOVE IT!!! Bought it @ P & D Enterprises. $750 was the price plus the extra mags.

The Norinco's function just fine, they sometimes lack some fit & finish. They are a good inexpensive pistol. However, one thing to note, the 1911's can be upgraded with all kinds of aftermarket parts, but I am not sure if the rest of the Norinco lineup can be. I have heard (rumour, as I have never owned) the hipower clone for example, does not take all hipower parts without gunsmithing.

It might also be worth looking for a used cz to save a few bucks.

My first pistol 2 years ago was a Ruger P944 in .40 S&W, at the time it was $499 new at Wholesale, I put on a pair of Hogue rubber grips and an extra magazine and it was a very functional pistol. Interestingly, shortly after I sold it, some of the Ruger carbines showed up at Shooting Edge, which use the same magazine. I think the pair would make for a fun matched combination. Being all steel, it was milder recoiling than some of my plastic framed pistols that I bought after it.

I have the colt Woodsman "clone". The gun is different enough that I don't think there are too many parts that would interchange, not even the magazines. Compared to north american standards, the quality of manufacture is pretty crude in places. The one consolation is that .22 handguns are probably the cheapest to shoot.

Default Norinco Tokarev

I bought a norinco tokarev. It is a 7.62X25 but you can buy an extra 9mm barrell for about 100 bucks. You can buy the gun from marstar or P&E in Edmonton. I've seen it in other stores too but P&E is where I bought mine for just over 200 bucks. It's a smaller gun. The 7.62X25 round is cheap and shoots well. I mostly use 9mm with mine though.

I recently bought a Norinco 1911 Commander from Armco. Gunnar is a world renown pistolsmith and works over all the Norcs he sells. This was my first pistol so was Interested to see what an experienced 1911 shooter had to say about my pistol. I have had 2 people try it out and both were very impressed with the performance and both said the trigger pull was perfect. At about half the price of the mainstream brands it was a very good buy.
