Default Difference between Rem 700 and Rem 710

Hope someone with a lot more gun knowledge than me could help me out. I saw the sales at SIR and those are darn good prices. Like a few I am a lefty so it doesn't help me out but my brother shoots the "right way". I have read a few posts saying how bad the 710's are so am shy towards these guns.

My question and it may be a stupid one is what is the difference between the 700 and 710? Will the 700 be subjected to the poor accuracy claims of the 710? I saw that Dick284 has picked up a 700 and really respect his opinion on firearms. Hope someone could clear it up for me. Thanks

The remington 710 uses some pretty non standard gunsmithing to acheive bolt lock up. the bolt lugs actually lock into the barrel instead of the receiver which BTW is the Norm. The 710 was a cheap low cost production initiative to allow Remington to bite into the same market niche that Savage had carved out with their 100/11/116/16 series of rifles. The 710's had all sorts of issues, and have been majorly re vamped and are now called the Model 770. One has to ask why the re vamping, and why the nomiclature change? Actually it's simple Remington screwed the pooch on the 710, and the best advice I can give is back away and re think your requirements. I'd buy a Savage bolt rifle long before looking at the 710, at least the savages have a reputation for accuracy on a budget, the 710 can only claim to be a great let down.
The remington 700 is the queen of factory made bolt guns, round bottom receiver, adjustable triggers, and reputation for good accuracy. The 700 locks up in the receiver and flaunts it's totally enclosed bolt face although many claim it's extractor is it's week point it's been prooved problems with the Remington extractor are often a result of poor usermaintence or poor reloading practices.
I'd back away from the 710, and get a 700 but that's just my opinion.
Good luck.

Like Dick284 said, a 700 is a good rifle. I wouldn't even think about a 710.

700 = Buick 710 = chevette. Get the picture? Buy a Savage, Stevens or a 700 SPS.

Thanks for the quick and detailed response. I will let my brother know to stay away from the 710 and look at the 700. Thanks again

oh come on now guys...i have a 710 in 7 mm rem. mag and a 700 bdl in 30-06, obviously the 700 is way better looking and all around smoother (trigger, action, safety) but if you get past the ugly stock and rough action mine shoots 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards plus it weighs next to nothing and can take a beating becauose, well, it can't get any uglier

You're rifle might work well for you but I've heard a few too many rumors to be comfortable letting anyone walk into buying one of these. I don't like Remington but I'd recommend any of the 700 line over the 710.

At least with the Savage 110 / Stevens 200 the only down side was the finish. The stock btw on the Stevens is actually better quality than the Savage. More rigid.

I wouldn't even keep a gun that shoots a 1 and a half inch group at 100 yards. That is rediculous. I'd hat e see what it does all the way out to 400 yards.
