Default Good .243 for 15 year old intrested in deer hunting

Hi, I was wondering what would be a good gun to go with that is reasonably priced but still reliable? Thanks

I would have a look at the TC Venture. Most important is to get something that will fit well. For the smaller stature of youth the Browning Micro Midas is a nice option and will hold some value once he/she outgrows it.

I don't personaly own one however have shot one and I found it to be a well built rifle for the price point. Would say it is on par with the vanguard.

Definatly was as acurate as you can ask from a factory rifle.

Have a look 260Rem's shooting with one (Post 7 & 8) http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showt...ight=challenge

The best gun would be hard to tell someone to buy. He is best to go in and hold a few different ones, and see what feels the best. Not all firearms fit everyone the same. One that feels good to one person may feel awful to another. I would look at some of the junior models that you can later upgrade to and add length to the stock. As for manufactures, My wife has a Mossberg 4x4 270 with muzzle break. She absolutely loves it, and I admit have occasionally used it my self and I have to say for the price, out of the box it is very accurate. She's had it 3 years now and only had to adjust the scope the day she bought it. Feels good and not a lot of recoil. It doesn't have a lot of value and may not be top grade. But if he is wanting something where he doesn't have to be worried about dings, and scratches I would say take a look at it. This is the one the wife has. http://chwkdart.com/wp-content/uploa...le-bolt-10.jpg

Best of luck

My 2 nephews shoot Savages Youth models in 243. Just picked one up for the younger one this past XMAS in an Axis. Both have taken deer and the older boy now 16, took his first bull elk last year (5x5) with his around 100-125m , 2 shots. First was a kill shot, his dad told him to hit the bull again.

Remington Model 7 is another.

I love my axis, granted I put a different scope on it then the one that comes in the package. But between the vortex and 95gr federal fusion ammo, that thing is a deer slayer. And reliably accurate to minimal 300. Thats the farthest I was shooting it at the range.

Hows the trigger on your Axis? I had an Axis for a few months, but the 7 lb trigger wasn't fun at all. Rather than dump money into a new trigger, I parted ways with it. The fellow I sold it to had a trigger job done and was very happy with it.

For a new gun, there are better choices in my opinion. The next step up Savage with the accutrigger should still be under $500, and a much better gun than the Axis. You wouldn't go wrong with a Weatherby Vanguard, a T/C Venture, or even a Remington 700.

Any idea on a price point for the gun that you'd want to spend?

Never really noticed the trigger pull lol, I just had to get the gun and run a few dryfires. Its a little on the stiff side, Iv definitely shot worse. Its not near as light as the 7mag I have but the trigger pull is nice and crisp. But the best 300 iv spent on a rifle (next to the sks )

If they had one in left hand chambered in 7mmMag id buy another

The savage Axis rifles are the best economy cast rifles you can get on a budget. They are reliable and quite accurate from what I have seen second hand, triggers weren't amazing when I got to dry fire one but it wasn't horrible either.

I'm thinking the max I would want to spend would be $650.

IMO that price range, I would get the axis and put a good scope on it.
My package came to about 620 or so

There is no doubt that the Axis is an accurate gun. Mine would do 1.5 MOA, even with the terrible trigger. They are pretty much as reliable as any other rifle based on the Mauser design. But I don't think they are the best, and I certainly don't think they provide the best value for your dollar. They are cheap - I don't think you can find anything for less.

For $650, you can easily step into a better gun. My suggestion is still the Savage 16/116 series with the accutrigger, but shop around and visit a few shops. You might find a nice used rifle that would fit the bill.

The key is to shop around, shoulder a few to see what fits and feels good as there are lots of choices out there. Don't watch a show and get all caught up in the TV hoopla as these people are sponsored to showcase these rifles etc...sponsored by Sako than go to their place and fine their go to rifle is a Browning! Shop around, its all part of the fun.

Why not check out a 7mm-08. A little more weight for mid sized game yet light recoil. Tikka T3 lite blued is a good gun, accurate yet not very expensive.

X2. I bought my 12 year old a tikka t3 in a 243. Wish now I would have bought a 7-08. He is going to be 14 right away and now wants a 300wm.

That's definitely impressive if a 14 year old can hunt better with a .300 win mag than he can with a .243.

I never said he can hunt better with a 300. He shoots my 300 as well as he does his 243. I said I wished I would have got him a 7-08 as he should be drawn for his first moose tag this year and the 7-08 with 140's would be a better choice than the 243.

Yes I know what you said thank you, I have the post in front of me You don't agree that it would be impressive? That is simply what I stated, not questioning your statements.

I agree, I just bought my 12 year old the Savage Axis Youth in 7mm08. I never did like the .243 for deer and I have seen a 7mm08 drop a moose in its tracks. Better all around cartridge.

Better yet they have them at the UFA in Red Deer for $329 bucks with a scope. Even putting a better scope on its a good deal

Did not want to discourage the 243 BUT my son runs a Tikka T3 stainless synthetic in 7-08 and yes this is a nice calibre. He shot his first bull moose this year and it dropped in its tracks..140 barnes X hand loads not too hot does the trick just fine.

Quite cheep I think, on par with .243 ammo. However you get more bullet choices with 7mm than the .243/6mm especially if you hand load.
