Default First Time .44 Magnum...Holy Cow!

Wow, just thought I'd announce that I had my first opportunity to fire a few 180 grain rounds out of this bad boy(ruger blackhawk)! Man oh man, if you've never and you ever get the chance, be sure to give it a try!

I also got to fire a few .38 rounds out of a .357 (s&w 686) and had never done that before either...very cool! I actually found the 'light loads' to still have a fairly significant recoil...more than I was expecting at least!

Be kind to one another and have a super day!

Shooting .44 Special or .44 Special equivalent .44 Magnum loads out of your Blackhawk would be a lot of fun too. It prolongs your shooting time!

Any idea what the load is? Factory or someone's reloads?

240s at 1500 fps are pretty snappy (especially out of a 5" barrel), and are always good for turning a few heads on the handgun range. Would like to load some 300s, but I think 300 grain and up are probably better matched to something in .45

Oh oh, now you're hooked! I love shooting my pistols, my 629 is grin inspiring with 240 gr .44 magnum loads. My 15 yr old girl will shoot any of my .357s all day long, and bankrupt me, if I let her. My 18 yr old daughter likes shooting my Sig P220 in .45 best. My P226 in .40 S&W is a hoot, the 9 mm is just great plinking.....now all I need to do is find time to go out and shoot more often!

....now... When you step up to something like a .454 casual or 45/70 BFR with snappy hand loads your eyes will be really wide and your heart will be in your throat...

I usually shoot my Freedom Arms 454Casull with cast bullets ahead of Trailboss, as it is very pleasant to shoot at 45Colt velocities. Stepping up to jacketed 240gr bullets at 1500fps wakes you up quickly, and at 1900-2000fps, the recoil is more than I care to shoot on a regular basis.

True....I shot a friends .460V, and had to admit it was impressive, but in the grand scheme of things, I'm happy with my .44 being my 'big gun', I'd still classify it as 'user friendly'. I couldn't shoot the .460V for any prolonged range time, and the cost is pretty high. I'm going to have to find someone with a .500 S&W to try at some point though, just because.

Lol! Great comments guys! A very generous person at the range let me try them out so unfortunately they weren't mine...But I do have my rpal so will have to get geared up! We were shooting hand loads so I'm not sure how much energy we were cranking out but between the flames and loud shockwave, we definitely got noticed.

When you can't keep your hand closed around the grip after the hammer drops you know you should back it off half a grain... Or work on your grip

I'm shooting a 180gn .40 under a 5.3gn load of titegroup. 1100fps.

A bit stout for an IPSC load, but boy she is soft as a kitten. I went with a 24lb mainspring, and a 10lb variable recoil spring.

Of course other .40 shooters keep bugging me about my 'cannon' fetish...

That sounds like a nice load, I wouldn't mind trying that! My .40 is a P226 Stainless Elite, so quite a bit heavier than my E2 in 9mm. I find that with most factory loads, my .40 is very comparable to my 9mm. Maybe you should cook up a box for me......

How about this...

Another fella and I played with this load for our 10mm Glock's...
He went up to 9.8gr or a bit higher....
My chrony said I was 1280-1300 with my "lite" load.

LOL...... I have something for that actually.

357SIG. 124gn 9mm under 15.3gn H110. 1572fps. IPSC Major (by a loong way) with a ported barrel.

DO NOT try that load unless your pistol has a comp... bad things happen....

But for a 10mm, that isn't too bad at all. Want to have some real fun? Buy a 9mm barrel and get it reamed to 9x25 Dillon (10mm necked down to 9mm). Attach a compensator. 17.7gn H110, and the gasses shoot over 10' high. BUT double plug and muff, it is really really really loud.... much more so than the SIG and roughly 17-1800 fps out of a 5" bbl

I get "close" to that with 155 XTP's and Alliant power pistol... I have a factory compensated G20c... After 1550 the brass takes a hell of a beating!

LOL, need one of these...... a comp that helps out a bit more and a fully supported barrel.

Though I hear the newer Glock's are better, and they are.... but my carbide resizing die still screams a like a cat when processing Glocked brass.

For a nice mid-range plinking load for any .44 Mag. use 8 grn of Unique under a 240-255 GN Keith style bullet. All my 44's love it and you can shoot all day without to much wrist ache.

When you want to put in a manly load then switch over to 2400 powder and have some fun. My 4" 629 is a handfull with full power house loads and is always a crowd pleaser at the range.

I love 44 mag. My Dan Wesson is the only handgun that I haven't considered selling. It's a 6.5" bbl full underlug. The round is so versatile that if I had to pick only one gun it would be it.

I load 240gr lead bullets with 5.0 grs of clays for a nice, light target load. In a heavy gun it feels like a 22lr. Clays is nice and clean too. Lead is cheap so you can load for 15 cents a round or cheaper.

For a big fireball I load 31.5 grs lil' gun behind a 180 gr xtp. The recoil is low for a full house load but you can feel the heat from the muzzle flash with each shot. It's a hoot to fire these off in an indoor range with low lighting.

My big boy loads are made with 300 gr nosler hp's with 17.5 grs I'll gun. These little guys get the most chuckles and winces from the guys at the range as they go off with a big boom. My gun is pretty heavy, has excellent grips and has a ported barrel which lowers the muzzle rise a fair bit and it still is a handful. I'm a certified recoil junky and these fill my need for speed.
