Introduced Young Hunter to Coyotes
I took a young hunter out for coyotes for the first time today. Two minutes after turning on the caller, a coyote came across the field on a dead run, and stopped 50 feet from the young fellow. We were back in the trees, and the young fellow got excited and hit a limb, and I could not get a clear shot because of the trees. The young fellow tried a running shot, no idea if he even came close.
A few minutes later, another coyote is headed in, but slow and cautious. At about 300 yards the coyote held up, then decided to trot off, and I missed a shot at it trying to shoot between the trees.
We moved to another field and set up only to have two trespassers on electric bikes ride up to our set up to investigate. We informed them that they were trespassing, listened to one idiot claiming that there were no signs , and sent them off of the property, with a warning to not return.
While we didn't kill anything, the young fellow is totally hooked on coyote hunting.

Good on you, any time you introduce young people to something new in the hunting / fishing or anything in the outdoor world it is the best education you can give them.
Sounds like you had a great day

We are going to head out next week again, to that area, and to another couple of the landowners properties as well. I may even bring a shotgun next time for the close running shots. Hopefully, we don't run into any more trespassers, the one woke idiot actually got offended , when he was told that it is his responsibility to know whose property that he is on, and that no signs are required.

Round two this morning, less than 10 minutes, and a coyote steps out of the timber at less than 100 yards, and looks at us. My young hunter shoots, but misses. Of course it is back in the timber, before I can get a shot. It's time to check his rifle/scope, before we go again.

Oh no! That’s the poops for sure. Good call on checking his zero. As well as taking him out again for Round 2.

I was thinking the first miss was excitement, but now I need to check the zero and the scope. He has already had one Vortex scope fail, this might be the second. There will be a round three next week, we can't quit now.

The excitement is a real thing. I think I missed or never even got shots off at the first 5 or 6 I first called in. I’m a Vortex hater myself. I’ll toss it out there, if it is the scope, I have an old Bushnell 3-9 that he can have. It isn’t fancy but, it holds zero and the glass is good. It’s a 1” tube if that’s what his rings are. Then he can sell the replacement he gets from Vortex. It’s an idea anyway.
Nope. You’re in it to win it now! Quitting is not an option.
