Health Care Coverage for Retirement
Coming into retirement will be removed from employment health coverage.
Anyone have any ideas with which coverage to go with?
ie. Bluecross, Surehealth, etc.

Coverage
I have blue cross and buy about $300.00 of drugs each month and I spend only $30.00 on them and never more than $25.00 on any item. Best of all blue cross is free because of my age. Piker

I retired a year ago. Reviewed numerous plans and best one I found for me was the Blue Cross retiree plan. As my employer plan was with them I got 10% off my monthly premium as a bonus.
When looking at plans make sure to check out their travel coverage. Some plans may only cover you for 15 days out of province at a time.

Alberta Residents get free blue cross coverage at age 65
there are limitations. dont quote me but I think it is $230 for glasses every 3 years and $5000 dental coverage every 5 years. Eligible prescriptions (not everything makes the list) cost you maximum $25 for each refill.
Myself and my spouse were covered for prescriptions as soon as I reached 65 but she had to turn 65 before the glasses and dental kicked in for her to have coverage.

Blue cross prescriptions charge a dispensing fee. If you get a 3 mos supply you pay the same dispensing fee as for a one month supply.
A guy could save a few hundred bux a year.

Income dependant. After one makes so much it is not available. Threshold is not very high. Can't recall for sure but something like $54,000 combined income based on submitted taxes is the threshhold.

I see Surehealth/Greenshield is doing a lot of advertising re: Healthcare polices.
Anyone have experience with this company?

When you turn 65 in Alberta you and your spouse are automatically covered , just remember to register when you get the notice (3 months before your birthday). Even though my spouse is only 62 she is covered under me. $2000.00 perscription cost me 25.00.

As an Alberta resident turning 65, you and your spouse are entitled to premium-free benefits from Alberta Health Care.

One of the achievements of the social policy of Canada and the United States is medical care available to all citizens and permanent residents.

Yes, I know of one such example:
Quote:
Effective March 1, 2020, seniors' family members under 65 years of age are no longer eligible for the Coverage for Seniors program.

Kenny removed spouse off Alberta coverage if they are not 65. Also as mentioned you must not be to well off in retirement, some where around $50K in combined income.
