Default Mushrooms in trees

Was out by McLean creek yesterday and found a bunch of mushrooms in the trees. They were upside down and right side up. Some up to 15’ in the trees. At first I thought someone threw them up there but we were kinda remote and there was probably a dozen or more trees with them up there. Do birds or squirrels grab them and haul them up there?

Squirrels would be putting mushrooms in trees. They put hazelnuts underground and probably some mushrooms.

Yep, squirrels. Had them fill a couple boxes up with mushrooms in my shed one year.

It would be red squirrels or flying squirrels stashing the mushrooms.

Not squirrels.

The Little People put these mushrooms into the trees.
This is done as a returned offering to the Stars, which is where Mushrooms come from.
This act guided the likes of Evenki shamans to learn and share the secrets of gifting with all of humanity.

What you are seeing is Nature's Christmas Tree.

Seriously now, would it be safe to assume that if it won't kill the squirrel it won't kill me?

Squirrel food cache.

Squirrels eat mushrooms my books list as toxic. I would never trust another creatures food choice as safe for me.

Squirrels also eat choke cherry pits that contain cyanide. Enough to give a human the raging runs. Scale that down to squirrel size and it ought to be lethal to them, if they were like us.

Saw the same thing down the Castle valley, all were about eye level when you rode a horse. I was talking to an old time mountain man and ask him about them. He said it was the stellar jays as he's watched them on a couple occasions.
