Default 2019 Alberta Elk Rut

I know the sound of a bugle is music to ears on most of this forum, so thought I'd start thread about elk rut this year and seeing if guys are hearing activity yet in different parts of the province.

Yes it's little early with peak rut more or less mid to late Sept, but a friend said bulls were bugling at Jasper this previous weekend, and last year we found some pretty active bulls on Sept long which is just around the corner.

Good luck to everyone out there!

I was north-west of Edson the Sunday and Monday at the start of the season and things were pretty quiet. Windy as hell though, so that might keep things buttoned up.

Do elk on the prairie also bugle? I have seen a couple around the property over the last two year yet never heard a thing.

Light bugles, rarely though, in Peace country. My cousin called in a spike and a decent bull on the first day of archery season. Didn’t get a shot on the good one. The bull didn’t seem to be interested in the cow calls, but responded well to bugle. We went out the day before yesterday again to a different spot and all quite.

I heard bugles Monday and Tuesday. Nothing came in to anything and any bugle returned shut down that bull for the day.

Your suggesting my calling skill is the only reason an Elk would shut up. Please tell me more...

Default Elk

Had elk bugle from Aug 20th to Nov 1.
They like to talk. Learners often bugle back at these bulls and educate non commital bulls in a hurry.

Was out in the Turner Valley area last night, not hunting, just listening in areas I know elk frequent. Heard a few weak bugles, nothing very exciting. The elk didn't respond to any calls I made, either cow or bull sounds. Should be happening soon though.

Watched from a distance two herds of 15-20 cows today and didn't notice a bull running around with them, much rutting activity yet. Soon though!

I was out the last few days in towards slave lake and didnt hear much. Tried a bit of night bugling in some areas just to see if I'd get a response and didnt get any.

Will be out Wednesday-Friday this week. Fingers crossed. Still looking for my first Bull

My wife has already hung her coveted

“We interrupt this marriage for Hunting Season” sign...

I’m like a kid two days before Christmas.

PS... the “ you suck on the bugle” post was pretty funny.

Starting to ramp up in the saddle hills area. They are bugleing but not super aggressive. Lots of cow groups with no bulls.

One bull bugled in and arrowed around Longview.

A few starting to respond in 302... but always way after dark.
