S&W 686- 357 MAG. 5" barrel worth?
Got a friend who is looking to get rid of it, I want to buy it. Can't see more than a couple boxes down the barrel. Nothing upgraded. It's pretty much now. What should he be looking to get, and what should I be looking to get it for?

As with anything----something is only worth what one is willing to pay.
But enough philosophy lol
$500 - $600ish used is about the going legal rate.

Thanks fellas. That's around what I was thinking. As for the dry firing. From what I've read, and even coming from S&W... Dry fire it until your heart is content. It's the rimfire revolvers you have to worry about, and the cheap revolvers... So they say.

Correct
Dry firing won't affect a handgun. Well don't go crazy on it.

357's are a blast lol
Not to mention cheaper when loaded with 38's for plenty of practice

Actually, you can use .38 Spl loads in a .357 Mag........

38 special is the parent case for 357- 38 is just shorter.
Now I am seriously interested in any 500.00 686's ! lol

Yup! That's why I want it, so I can shoot the .38 special!
I believe a lot of revolvers are labeled 357mag/38sp correct me if I'm wrong here!

you can safely shoot .38SPL (Even .38SPL P+) in .357Mag marked revolver/firearm, but not other way......
the most of revolvers are marked eather .38SPL or .357Mag......
.38SPL in .357Mag - YES
.357Mag in .38SPL - NO

You can shoot .38 or .38 special in a .357 revolver, it just need a good cleaning of the cylinder chambers when you'll swap to .357. Lot of fouling stay at the end of the chamber when you shoot .38, that may prevent your .357 bullet to sit properly. Which can result in a stuck case.
Dryfiring, especially training for decocking or opening/closing the cylinder, may affect the timing of a revolver. Just make sure you "click" the cylinder in front of the barrel every time you close it, so there is no gap. Hard to explain, but it is easy to figure out with the gun in hand.
Since your gun seems to be new, that timing issue should not be a problem.

Ruger Blackhawk .357 sold for 610. at the Olds auction, plus of course the buyers 10 % fee. Bit steep for that gun, I thought.

Seeing as how the vast majority of Canadians are only shooting targets with their 357, most people use 38 Specials in their 357. 90% of the loads that I have fired through my 357, are cast loads in 38 Special cases.
