This one had chain rattle at startup which just started. No broken guides, minimal phaser noise. I'm hoping I caught it in time. I'll know soon enough.

Edit- The caveat to that statement should be that that I don't pay for labour so there's not much to lose going this route.
Absolutely, 15w40 is just a bandaid if you don't want to repair.

LOL I have a Titan instead of a Tacoma but otherwise the experience is close to the same.

It's a bit under 300,000 and I did have to get the front brakes and U joints done but that's all.

Kid brother was a Chev man. He got tired of paying for major repairs twice a year and bought a Dodge, it was worse.

Now he has a Titan and is going on two years trouble free. He works oilfield and puts on a lot of miles in a month. Often more then 5,000 a month.

The Tacoma's aren't necessarily bullet proof either. A friend of mine owns a 2009 and he has put a substantial amount of work into it. It did take a heck of a beating though. (No worse than my Ford)

My wife's Corolla has been great. I may look at a Tundra next time.

Are you afraid to scratch the new ecoboost? Only the first dent hurts, it would make a good trapping rig I'm sure.

To date on the 6 ecco boost we have had at work( we only have one left thank the good lord)
64 coils
126 spark plugs
14 rear diff rebuilds( stopped using ford parts put in Detroit lockers, no problem with them)
6 front hub and bearings
16 front brake pads
22 rear brake pads
4 exhaust manifolds
2 sets of turbo chargers
2 transfercases
everyone has had the door panels off and fixed the damb rods that connect outside to inside door handle to open the doors

all have had air bag rear suspension added as the two leaf springs stock will hold exactly 3 bags of garbage before the rear suspension is flattened out.
All six have averaged about 16.9 L per hundred
Pulled my 5th wheel trailer exactly once, got 36L per hundred driving as nice as humanly possible.
They do drive nice empty though, handle like a car, and have good jam, have more pulling power than the 5.4L for sure.

But other than that they are OK.

True.

I've never had a bad one and I've owned a few Japanese vehicles. But I've heard of a few problems with all makes.

What I see is that the Japanese vehicles are a lot less maintenance and on average experience a lot fewer lemons. But they certainly aren't perfect.
No vehicle I know of, is.

Going on what I have experienced, I would also say, Ford has the poorest record, Chev is a bit better, but only a bit and Dodge/Chrysler is a bit better still, but far from good.

I've owned most domestic makes and a few European made vehicles. I like Toyota and Nissan the best, but from what I have owned I'd say they win, but not by much.

I've had nothing but good luck with fords on number 4 for personal and company use and nothing but brake pads being worn off on the company trucks, over 600 k no issues

A lot depends on you drive it and maintain it.
Previous vehicle was a '96 Toyota Previa that I got rid of in 2009 with 425000km that never needed more than routine maintenance (oil, brakes, timing belt, etc).
Bought a low mileage Chev Trailblazer afterwords that now has 320000km that has been just as reliable.

When has a Japanese based truck ever looked good ... never ... alway's a mishmash of over done plastic chrome and logo's too big ... no flow to their body styles ...

Absolutely true. I don't get mad about stuff I broke, bent, wore out or neglected.

Not being able to seal a timing tensioner after an update I'm not ok with. In hindsight the tensioner was the root cause of my initial engine failure. If I had replaced it at the first sign of it I don't think I would have had to replace the engine. I took it in while under warranty and complained about it but I got the "it's normal operation" spiel. Of course after the warranty is up it becomes much more pronounced.

So far I've still saved money not buying a Toyota. What I should have done was bought the one year old red crew cab 7.3 diesel I looked at. I cheaped out and bought a one year old f150.
