Ruger 10/22 and Remington 597: new 22's!
I picked up a 10/22 for my son this year, we bought him a scope yesterday. He was looking through the Simmons and had decided on the 4x when the fellow helping us suggested a Tasco. The Boy looked through them both and preferred the glass on the Tasco. Both impressed me with the clarity considering the price. $369 for the rifle and $57 for the scope, total cost of $426
I bought myself a 597 this year as well, kinda wanted a semi but something different. Topped it with the Nikon P-Rimfire. As I mentioned, the clarity of the Tasco impressed me but I'm glad I bought the Nikon. It is very nice! I struggled to justify the extra bucks on a scope for a 22 but given how much it will be shot, the savings on the rifle and the overall quality of the scope I'm pretty happy with my
$219 for the rifle, rings and base were probably $45 and $199 for the scope, total cost of $463.
I'm interested to see how they both compare.
Initial impressions, I prefer the composite stock and rotary mag of the Ruger. One of the selling features of the 597 for me was the 30 round mag, the one I got doesn't lock in place it just drops out. Remington product too. The stock mag should hold 10 rounds, I'd have to remove the follower for that to happen; I can fit 8. As for accuracy, we took them out yesterday to shake out the cobwebs and sight them in. I'm not willing to comment on group size at this time 😬

I agree with the mag issue. But over time my 597 mags fit in quite snug, and pull out with no issue. IMO the 10/22 used to be the go to, but something happened about 5-10 years ago that made the overall quality suffer, and now i would recommend the 597, especially considering the 30% cost savings.

A few years ago we got my son a special edition 10/22 and he loved it. A year ago, for Christmas I got a 597 heavy barrel. I started shooting it and fell in love with it to the point that I never shoot my 10/22 anymore. My son also liked enough to sell his 10/22 (which I bought from him), and purchase the same set up in the 597 that I have.
At first I couldn't get 10 rounds into the magazine either but it wasn't long until I could. Things just have to "break in and settle". I have 4 of the 10 round's, never did buy a 30 round for the Remington. I found I never used the banana mags on the Ruger even though I had them, so I never did buy any. I did just buy another 10 round magazine and out of the 4 that I have, only one gave me trouble to start but after shooting it I have no problems getting 10 rounds in that one either.
The one problem I did have was the bolt hold open spring failed. It was a $4.75 plus shipping part. Minimum order was $20 or $25 so I ordered enough to last a while I hope. I have heard of these failing but it's not often from what I can tell.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of aftermarket available for the 597's. A company making trigger spring kits. Trying to find aftermarket stocks is a little tricky, but Boyd's makes them. One thing I was told about the trigger was to find an old trigger shoe from a paintball marker. They just bolted on and made it more comfortable to pull which made it seem like a lighter pull.

I bought one back in the 90's and have shot a barrel full of ammo with no troubles. Changed the stock to a thumbhole and polished up a few pieces here and there. Clean it when it stops feeding, has worked for me.

I own a 10/22 and owned two others previous to it.
I see a fair number of guys shooting them at the range. Mine gets what I believe to be typical accuracy for a non modified or slightly modified 10/22. It's accurate enough to shoot gophers at typical ranges
I installed some Volquartsen parts to improve its function.
- extractor ...... this was a great addition to my gun
- bolt release
- mag release
They are a fun gun to shoot. It's been my experience to not expect too much from them in the accuracy department unless you're willing to spend some money.
Try out some different types of ammo. Pick the best. Enjoy your gun. Over a million shooters can't be wrong.

I've played in many different semi auto 22s but I must say I prefer the 10/22 the most. The new guns aren't quite as nice as the older ones but a couple small upgrades make them real nice. Having shot factory and built 10/22s accuracy seems more to have to do with ammo than anything. Crap ammo in my 1500$ 10/22 still only shoots 0.75" at 50 yards with a 5 shot group.
