Good and snug, make them commit. Never loose for these species. 4 lbs perfect for coyote, so should be good for Lynx, lighter for the fox. Loose pans makes nasty catches, lots of toe catches and lots of sprung traps. Get a Sullivan Trap Tester Scale, a very good investment. (I even just got a half dozen of them sitting here!)

marty,(or any one) what's your thoughts on "dog" vs "dog less"?

all my foot traps are at home now. i was thinking about converting to a dogless pan.

before getting them back out, next week. after i'm done christmas shopping.

is it worth it? what kind, for bridger #3's?

thanks

I think 4 pounds may be a little heavy for lynx. I set mine at 2-2 1/2 and it seems to work pretty well.

I'm not a coyote trapper so I can't comment on that, but I'm sure Marty has them figured out.

Currently I am very big on using a Pawsitrip pan on every coyote trap that I own, coupled with the stainless rod dog on my new traps and reinforced dogs on old traps. I like them very much, no piddling around, ever! Just set the trap, perfect pan tension every time. I hate other dogs, because you have to fiddle with them, get bent up etc, and these systems are high maintenance to get proper pan tension every time.

Dogless traps require maintenance too, but less than bent dogs. You need to check pan tension every time. Adjustment isn't neccessarily straight forward, depending on trap type. Some of America's most elite coyote trappers love their dogless traps, and let me narrow that down to those that have an (old) Montgomery #4 square jaw style dog less pan. I vehemently dislike the dogless traps which are controlled by a nut and bolt style system. (Set,test, adjust, Set,test, adjust, Set,test, adjust, etc)
