Default Rainbow eggs?

I caught and killed a rainbow from a stocked lake toda. Was surprised to find a bunch of eggs inside. I'd have thought being spring spawners that any roe would have been long gone. I confess though that in 10 years of fly fishing, this was only the fifth fish I've ever eaten. Any ideas?

Im defiantly no expert and this is more of a guess that anything. Even though they spawn in the spring they are going to start to develop the eggs long before than. Im guessing that they were tiny, no where close to what they will be full size in the spring.

Modern rainbow stockers are genetic mongrels. In their ancestral background there could be anything from winter spawners to summer spawners. I believe there is even a manmade strain of r'bows that are fall spawners nowadays

Easy Pit. Ate it for lunch today. Tasted like a mouthful of muddy lake water...

Yes man made fish now I'd like to see that. The stockers are tripleoid trout. They carry an extra set of chromosomes that we all carry at one point in development. They heat shock the fertilized eggs at the right time to retain the extra set. These fish grow faster and bigger but are sterile. I'm not sure if they still go through spawning rituals. But man made that would be cool

Larry,

* 2n (sexually active) rainbows were stocked in 2013 and the females have the ability to create eggs.
* 3n (triploids) were not stocked till 2014
* spawning timing has been altered in some rainbows so that they spawn in the fall. Fall spawning reduces the time the fish are kept prior to stocking . This reduces cost of u ally production.

What is this extra set we all carry at sometime? Humans do meiosis is there germ like cells creating 1n gametes. we get one paternal and one maternal to form a zygote... 1n+1n=2n

Default Rainbow eggs?

Without proper spawning channels the fish become egg bound and eggs are absorbed back into the trout. However, mortality rate of egg bound trout is high. In BC. Some of the stocked lakes had man made egg drop channels. (Spawning) after all the trout had dropped eggs and milt, pumps were then turned off and the artificial channels would dry up. This gave the females a chance to drop eggs and recover. This isn't necessary any longer since the creation of triploids. ( AF3N)

Manmade strain is just a tiny bit different than a manmade fish Hoss
