I find it incredible that this mass evacuation was pulled off in such circumstances with no loss of life. I hope that fire and emergency crews don't find the remains of anybody that tried to wait out the inferno in their homes, or anyone that was too old or ill to escape on their own.

Some footage I've seen today looked horrific, a complete apocalypse. Water lines exposed in the remaining building foundations fountaining out at low pressure because every line is opened up through the city, and fire pumpers are reducing the pressure all over. Just running around and shutting off all those homes and other buildings main supply valves will assist the fire crews to get adequate pressure.

I just got a call from a friend who is coming down today. He told me that the winds are increasing, and in a direction that will threaten the city again today. He and his brother camped at Gregoire Lake last night, and they gathered up enough fuel to head South today.

I've heard the same. Officials are worried later this afternoon the town site could be back in its path. Only with stronger winds than last night.

Sounds as of now the town is under control. Praying it remains safe.

Thanks to all the people on the ground.

Big traffic jam coming up to the corner at grassland. If anyone is in it you can take the gravel and get onto 855 lots quicker, as long as your ok on fuel anyway.

It's circumstances like these that make peoples true colors come out. Take note and don't forget. Guys like Ken07 and schmedia come back to the forum to offer help avb3 sets his personal feelings about global warming aside and posts information triumphing oil companies catthehat giving updates and moderating even though he is extremely stressed. These are the people that make this forum great. Also take note on the politics side what is happening. Don't want to go into detail as there are way more important things to deal with right now but once again true colors are coming out

Energy companies cut production, house residents who fled Fort McMurray

BLOOMBERG NEWS
More from Bloomberg News

Published on: May 4, 2016 | Last Updated: May 4, 2016 8:05 AM MDT

By Rebecca Penty, Robert Tuttle and Jeremy van Loon

Suncor Energy Inc. has reduced output in Canada’s main oilsands region as Alberta’s largest-ever wildfire evacuation forced thousands of people from Fort McMurray.

Oil and gas companies at the heart of the region’s economy including Suncor, Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Royal Dutch Shell are putting up evacuated residents at work camps north of the community. Suncor said it is reducing output at its facilities in the region to allow workers and their families to get to safety.

The wildfire is the latest blow to a community already coping with the economic toll of the oil price downturn in one of the world’s most-expensive places to extract crude. More than 40,000 oil and gas jobs have been cut in Canada since the price crash began in 2014.

“The conditions are changing quite rapidly,” Melissa Blake, mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray, said in a a briefing earlier on Tuesday. “The fire has grown. We’ve got tremendous dryness in the area right now.”

Thousands have been placed safely in rooms away from the threat of the blazes including at Noralta Lodge facilities that house energy workers, and more spots are needed, Premier Rachel Notley said at a briefing with reporters Tuesday afternoon.

‘Aggressive’ Fire

Highway 63, the main road in and out of Fort McMurray, has been breached by the fire, which earlier Tuesday afternoon started to become “aggressive,” Scott Long, executive director of provincial operations at the government’s Alberta Emergency Management Agency, told reporters.

Energy companies are helping to fight the blazes and crews from other parts of the province are also mobilizing to pitch in, Notley said. Alberta is also in discussions with other provinces about assistance, she said.

Shell opened its Albian Village work camp for all evacuated Fort McMurray residents who need a place to stay, Cameron Yost, a spokesman, said by email. Nexen, the Cnooc Ltd. subsidiary whose Long Lake oilsands project is close to Fort McMurray, is working on a modified staffing plan to safely manage the situation, Brittney Price, a spokeswoman, said in a emailed statement.

Suncor’s plant is about 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray and is in a safe condition, the company said in an e-mailed statement.

Yeah. It separates the men from the boys, for sure.

Great effort from this great province.

A devastating event. But a miracle in itself. In no loss of life.

We have family trickling in. Trying to set up a base station at the in laws acreage.

A tight knit extended family of roughly 20 people. Plus cats dogs and everything else. Hoping to keep everyone together.

The devastation they are feeling is unmatched by anything I've ever endured.

Wishing the best of luck to anyone effected by this unbelievable event.

Hug your loved ones and thank the blessing, that everyone is safe.

Outstanding job Alberta.

So if this isn't worthy of declaring a state of emergency, what is?

I sent crews up there last night to put up temporary communications. From what I have been told most of the aid (accommodation, food, water, fuel ect.) is coming from the oil companies and the public. It is a good thing that Albertan's and it's employers come together in times of need. If this happened anywhere else it would be declared a state of emergency.

We're in this for the long haul. I was involved through work with the rebuild of Slave Lake, this will take years, but it can and will be done.

My brother was in a convoy of fire fighters that went up yesterday afternoon from Red Deer in four trucks. They made it to Fort Mac in less than 6 hours and fought fires till 4:30am. Last I heard they were resting and getting ready to go back at it again.

I'm waiting on a few phone calls but it looks like we'll be housing some evacuees here in Calgary from one of the Firebag evac flights.

Very nice to see all the continued assistance.

Notley won't go to Ottawa for help. She won't declare a state of emergency. Good thing our gov'ts are sooooo supportive of our most prosperous province!!!!!

88,000 people evacuated overnight
Camps opened up on s moments notice
2 hours to evacuate the patients from the hospital . Two trips to get the seniors out.
Fires being held by crews non stop
Military and more crews on the way today
Three tankers with fuel on their way as I speak to help those in need
I think they are doing a pretty good job.
Oh, and BTW people I WAS THERE!
Not sitting behind s keyboard judging!!
I haven't read all the posts because I have been driving or no cell service but we need to take a step back and think of people like sdvc who lost his home in this
Disaster !
Oh Yeah ,NO LIVES LOST YET!
But if three steps can bet it will be s man or woman giving the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty!

State of emergency means something different than most people think it does it is more of bureaucratic term than a gauge of disaster. I basically gives a financial carte blanche and other authority powers to the person in command of the emergency so as she said in the video they already have those powers and aren't need province wide. Wish I could explain it better its been too long since I took the training course on this stuff.
