Default Stop the annexation of Leduc.

What do we have to do to stop the annexation of Leduc by Edmonton? Our streets are fully cleared of snow at least twice a year. All of our services are top notch, no pot holes and our city managers are professional and spend money wisely. Our crime rate is low and we are policed by a professional force the RCMP.
Edmonton to wants to take us over, grab our tax money to pay off their wasteful expenditures, drop our services to meet their minimal standards, and we get absolutely nothing worthwhile in return.
What can we do? Looking for ideas.

Default Community wide petition

Get a grass roots movement going and enlist other likeminded people to help get a signature from every resident of Leduc then give it to the town council.

I am wondering how many years it is till Calgary grows to the point that annexing Airdrie comes into play. When it does happen the residents and business's in Airdrie will mighty angry about it.A lot of business has moved from Calgary to Airdrie because of the cost of doing business.Best example I can think of is Ropak which moved it's operation there 10+ years ago.Ropak started with 1 building and grew from there to what it is now and it is a pretty big operation.

Amazing how these smaller communities don't want the issues of bigger cities but are very happy they only have to drive a very short distance to use all the amenities of it.

Arrow Here's a good idea!

Start the process of a 'Counter Annexation' (Leduc to annex Edmonton)! There is no legal precedence for this, so the court battles will go on for untold years. By the time the dust settles and the matter is finally resolved, the results won't really matter ... cuz you'll all be long-dead and gone.

On a more serious note:
For Leduc to block Edmonton's proposal of annexation, the matter has to be taken up with the provincial government. They are the ones who make the final call, and approve, or deny such proposals.

May 'The Force' be with you ... and

BINGO!!!
I wonder how many Leduc or Airdrie citizens would continue to live there if it was say...where Rocky Mtn House or Cold Lake is.

It works both ways. I live outside of Edmonton and the only time I go into the city is when I have to spend money.

I drove on their streets - thats about it.

Bingo.... The real one. The only time people hit the city is to depart from their pay cheques. Seems like a good system for everyone. I have NEVER drove into the city and departed without a flatter wallet.

Anything I get from the big city, I end up paying for. The money flows only one way when I visit and that is out of my pocket and into the businesses that are there. So not sure what you are intending in your comment.......

I go into the city to buy something when I need it. It's convenient for me. If Edmonton doesn't want me coming into the city to buy anything then I would like to hear that from them. I don't use their art museum (which I'm sure provincial tax dollars flowed into). I go to the odd football game, where again I drop $100 at the least. I'm not sure what precious City of Edmonton amenities I use other than dropping coin at private business which then pays taxes to the city and province and country.

They're calling it a land grab, but really it's nothing but a tax grab by an inept city that can't control it's spending. Edmonton has always been polluted with socialists that demand more ineffective government spending. Reap what ya sow.

Maybe Edmonton should start charging a toll for "foreign" people to come into the city. See what the Chamber of Commerce thinks of that idea.

Here's the existing petition and website for those that want. http://saveleduccounty.com/

And the city folk don't use any of the nice things in rural Alberta? Really want to go down that road?

Ahhh, rugatika with his contrarian point of view on everything.
It's a different world than it was 100 years ago bud...Alberta isn't 'rural' based anymore.
If it wasn't for the economic forces coming out of Edmonton and Calgary...most rural people couldn't exist as they do anymore.
It's a great province because of the diversity of the population...and the fact that most of us try to get along.

How many oil and gas wells are there in Edmonton and Calgary combined? How many acres of ranchland do you have? How many acres of grain does Edmonton and Calgary seed every year? Got a rough guess how much timber is harvested in Edmonton and Calgary every year?

I should have clarified.

My comment was more directed at the people that live in bedroom communities, work in the big city, and complain about the roads, services, etc.

Don't pay anything, use them all the time, yet complain.

The people that work in Edmonton and commute from outside communities work for a business that pays taxes to the city of edmonton.

Ahh...contrarian to the last.
Did you not read the part where I said we all need each other.
Without Edmonton/Calgary (or the rest of the urban centers where 80% of the population now lives...we don't need much of that grain and timber.
Last I'll say because I know you'll have to have the last word (as always).

Yes, and because of that I,as an employer, pay higher business taxes than I should which makes me (wait for it) want to move my business out of the city....gets very circular very fast

Annex away. They should do St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain, and Devon while they are at it. Seriously.

So apparently you can't get what you need or want from your little hamlets so be happy the city is there. I'm sure in the long run you get more from the city then the city gets from you.
I had always lived in small communities until moving here and know how a city at a close distance was a great benefit.

I know what you mean. All those Engineers, Operators, Electricians, Machinist, that come through Fort Saskatchewan to Work at the Plants within the City. Maybe a Toll booth required to cross the river.

I am happy the city is there. You were the one who started complaining.
I live in Camrose. We are very happy and encourage other surrounding communities and farmers to shop and use out amenities. Win win.
