Default Southern Alberta Mullies

Hey guys,

Its been a few years since I have been poking around southern Alberta, just wondering how the deer have been doing down there I have my own spots just looking for general info on the deer herd, and how the winter kills have been. More specifically around 151, 152. Starting to get that itch and am looking forward to some spot and stalk in the river basins and coulees.

Default mulie herds

We've experienced a few mild winters for a change, but unfortunately, the herds have not yet recovered from the big CWD culling.
Drought conditions will also effect horn growth in lots of areas. Prairies looking severely burnt here already!

I have a binder built with almost 200,000 acres of permission hunting lands, maps, directions, etc. I also google earth the hell out of the south region. I am all about putting on the miles for the spot and stalks. Maybe ill see you around the 150's WMU's.

That is an unreal amount of land... I have lived here my entire life and own dirt and can't imagine trying to figure out tracks of land as you have described. Better bring a fuel card, your going to need it

Most anything in the eastern portion of the province will need another 2-3 years of mild winters and some help from srd not flooding the area with tags before there are any number of mature bucks around.

All I read is negative stuff on here about numbers down, monster mule deer a thing of the past, a few more years maybe, hard winters, etc etc its like everyone seems to believe this is true or they try lead people to think this.. I happen to have pictures of 10-12 Mule deer 170-200+ inch with still a month of growth left from last set of pictures. Get out and do some spotting, put on the KM's and give it 100%.

People need to get out more. Mulies in the "south" are doing fine. Change your boots maybe lol.
Your idea of south differs from mine.

A friend of mine and his brother both shot monster mulies last year down south. I'd definelty get it mounted if it was me. He also used his bow and stalked a huge 5x5 white tail same hunt. They're down there, it's just the effort to put into the hunt. Good luck everyone.

Unfortunately with the harsh winters of past, coupled with the increased pressure in the South from excess tags, the age structure is not near as strong as many are portraying.

Going to take multiple years, good winters and some restraint to allow this species to flourish again in the South.

Post pics and your guess on the score of these deer. I bet you are way off and over scoring animals. I have herd this for years from so many people. Always ends up being way smaller after they are dead. Good enough reddeerhunter?

Things are on the rebound around here, not great still but not that bad.. I think a week in the right area and a guy should get a good but, depends how fussy you are. Fawn numbers look great this year, lets hope for a couple good winters and things should be looking really good.

The south is a big area. If your looking at 150 area you will find some deer but your going to work for em. I think that area and most other areas in the south need a couple years for the quality to be where it should be. Bucks are getting harvested a couple years before they should be because of numbers being down and too many hunters.

NICE! There are crankers everywhere. Like you say put in the time! It helps to hunt close to home, that way you can spot everyday. Not only get out a few times, see not much and then assume there are no big ones.
