Default Pesos

Guys the bank fell through and didn't get my order in time, so was wondering if someone might steer me in the right direction as the best place to get Mexican pesos in Edmonton tomorrow? Thank you for any responses

If you are stuck you can withdraw pesos directly from a Mexican ATM using your debit card or credit card. You will pay a service fee ($5 maybe) but it works and you will get a fair rate through the banking system. I wouldn't exchange in a hotel lobby as they will rip you off. I'm assuming you are taking a vacation and not buying firearms from the local Mexican cartel?

I know someone who just went to Mexico and needed Pesos so her travel agent told her to go to West Ed to the Foreign Exchange place. I think it was called Calforex. No idea what they charge.

Try going to another bank if you have time. I have had to go to a few different banks to fill my order before.

Calforex is pretty good. We grabbed some peso from there when we went in November and I think there rate was as good or better than the bank. Grabbed enough for a day or two and got the rest from an ATM when we got there. Doing the same thing for our 3 week trip that we leave for on Sunday.

Used Calforex a lot when I worked in Mexico.

Scotiabank is also down in Mexico and in some really small towns all over the country.

GF got hers in the West Ed Mall, forget the name of it but it's by the casino. Call in advance, make sure they have some. I believe she has some left, not sure.

I would NOT use an ATM in Mexico...

Wait till your there

I had the same post back in January.

We got around 12.5 at the resort.
Worth the wait.

Thats Calforex. There is one in Southgate too. Been to Mexico a ton and my mother lives there. Never had problems with ATM's but each to their own. I'd be more wary of carrying around large amounts of cash but I guess if you're in a resort you won't need a lot of spending money.

Found exchange rate at the bank atm down there to be the same as getting funds here outside of the 5 buck fee.

Default pesos

There's no need for pesos in Mex,they will gladly convert into American for any purchase .Besides that you won't want to be stuck with them once you come home.

Not entirely true. It is a PITA for Mexicans to exchange USD. And why would you covert CAD to USD to MEX? I tend to spend the currency of the country I'm in.

Its ok to have extra pesos if you plan on returning to mex but the American dollar can be used almost everywhere. We have beern to Mexico 5 times, they will take USA money everywhere,no issues ever. All the stores know how to figure out the exchange rate because everyone uses American money.

Revived a thread from 2007!! But just having got back from Mexico I will agree! Pesos are great for tipping staff. Usd still conquers all when it comes to purchases!

I've been going to Mexico for years. I've been 4 times this year, going back in a week and my mother lives down there. I don't judge how you want to spend your money but most vendors will give you 10-1 when you spend USD. In reality USD is more like 17-1 and CAD is 13-1. So you're actually losing money. And like I mentioned earlier it is tougher for nationals to exchange USD.

http://gomexico.about.com/od/money-m...-in-mexico.htm

"In the past travelers to Mexico could use US dollars for most transactions, and many people didn't even bother to exchange their currency into pesos. With new laws in effect since September 2010, however, the use of US dollars in cash for making purchases is limited, and the sums exchanged at banks and currency exchange booths are restricted. These measures have been brought into effect to combat money laundering and organized crime, unfortunately tourists and legitimate businesses are also affected."

We pay for everything in peso. Our rental car, groceries and my mom pays her rent in peso.

Yes you are correct tbiddy, sorry half of my post disappeared! They will fleece you pretty bad if you do not know your conversion from cdn or usd to pesos, but I suppose that's where they get the travellers! But the workers do prefer pesos as its money they can spend right away, where are the banks down there have limits to how much they can exchange from USD into pesos!

We paid for most things in pesos on the resort, our resort also had great conversion rates from cdn to pesos, and they carried small peso bills!

If you plan on going to mex again in the next few years just bring back whatever you have left over! We came home with 2000 pesos, which works out great for when we go next year!

Slightly jealous you get down there 4 times a year!

Love it down there. It's my moms 2nd year down there. Makes it easy to go when you have a free place to stay. We just watch for seat sales and head down when the price is right.

My mom retired down there. Just outside of PV. Rents a 2 bdrm, 2 bath condo for about $600 CAD a month. Pays about $100 every 2 months for power. She spends the summer at the lake. Kinda makes me wonder why I live up here.

Too late for you now I imagine, but if you go to the main branch of your bank in any large city they will have lots of cash in all major currencies. I just walk over to the main branch of my bank in downtown Calgary (easy as I work downtown) and get all the Pesos or Euros I would ever want on the spot, no ordering anything.
