I split 5-8 and engine brake is on high almost all the time. I turn it off in town, and on ice.

So how do you get a noisy or quiet one?

The older ones were really noisy. I would imagine these days you would have to order one. Not all jakes are created equally either. Some are anemic and some are like the hand of God reaching down and slowing you. I like the latter, especially on big hills and mountains.

The key words there are 'throttle control'. If you do not have that, clutching will save the drive line.
I had to laugh when I first started taking my wife to be with me. She would ask what I was doing. When I asked what she meant she would tell me that she noticed that sometimes I would double clutch, then single, most times use it not at all. After heavy hauling for years I've gotten so that I'll use the clutch at certain times and other times not. Say for instance when your loaded and turning a sharp corner with a tri tractor,16 jeep,24 lowboy,8 booster, the drag is pretty good so it's handy to use the clutch sometimes. 😃

This is the same with me. Grab full gears in low range then split in high most of the time. Depends on load weight and terrain, sometimes need to split in low and start out in bull low on hills etc.
I keep my jake on most of the time on high, what i'm used to.

Just so you know the noise level of a jake brake is not caused by the jake itself but by the exhaust system. Jake brakes can also be adjusted.

The best retarder I've used is a Voith driveline brake. The Voith with a well adjusted engine brake will stop anything. The beauty of a Voith is it's quiet.

Last year was my first full year driving for a living. I haul flatdeck for a Calgary based company around western Canada.
I made 65k. Not spectacular by any stretch but I've been told by many that thats pretty good for first year no experience.
We'll see....
