I also have a model 88, from 1957. Just wondering, is your serial number near mine? Mine is 440XX. I’ve recently come it have it but I think it’s going to be staying in the collection. You should write down what you know about it and leave it in the safe.

Awesome post. I have both grandfathers guns as well as my great great grandfathers Savage 1899b in .303 Savage from 1908. Heirlooms like these are way more interesting to me than any of the modern stuff..

Thank you for sharing..

Yes, the numbers are reasonably close as one might expect being the same year of production. Cool!

I have a bit of a running summary of the activities, hunts etc for this rifle, and that journal is kept with our other security stuff. Has an interesting past alright, and the next in line should be able to have a boo at that.

Cheers,
Matt

Got a Winner on the Scope:

Weaver K4 Brass. Crosshair. Excellent. c.1947-48

I do believe this is it.

Now to try and figure out why GrandDaddy put a 10 year old scope on his new rifle back in '57...

Cheers,
Nog

Cool story Nog. I have my great grandpa's Winchester 1894. It dates back to 1902 and, along with other tools that he required to homestead and break the land, he bought this rifle brand new on his arrival to Canada from the Ukraine. While handling the rifle I often wonder how many animals the rifle provided for him and his young family back then. The story goes that the rifle was originally chambered in 38-55 with a long octagon barrel. He had the barrel removed shortly after and it was replaced with a shorter one in 30-30 for easier handling in the bush. I sure wish I knew where he put that original barrel! I've searched the homestead on a few occasions with no success. Note his initials that he carved into the butt stock:

I'm happy and blessed that I will have the opportunity to pass the rifle down to one of our sons. My hope is that it will stay in our family forever as it is only one of a small handful of personal items that remain from his life.
